tough time deciding between following bay area schools:

I am a business major transferring from a JC in Stockton, CA. I only live an hour out from the bay area and have been accepted to each of the following schools:

San Francisco State
Cal State Eastbay
San Jose State

SFstate was my #1 choice, buts its rather expensive to live in the city. I am still deciding however.

Which school would you guys recommend as a business major? I would be living wherever i transfer to. I hear hayward (eastbay) has a great program, but I also hear they dont have much of a nightlife/social life.

^^^

Have you visited these campuses?

SF State: San Francisco is great, but the State campus is in the fog belt. Would that bother you moving from sunny Stockton?

Cal State Eastbay: I hate to say it, but Hayward is kinda nowheresville.

San Jose State: Don't know anything about it other than that a good friend has done well after having gone there and seemed to enjoy his time.

Have you thought about something like a fraternity/sorority to get plugged in socially? I think, and could be wrong, that this is stronger at SJ State.

Do you know what you want to do after you graduate? I think Silicon Valley (closest to SJ State) is the best place for you to pursue opportunities. San Francisco is a good HQ city, in a way, but unless you are sure you are going for accounting on the one hand or advertising services on the other, I'd say you'd be better off all else being equal at SJ State. Having said that, on a stylistic level, I would die living in San Jose or Silicon Valley. So if you can't stomach that, go to SF State.

Are you planning on internships and working between your junior and senior years?

Again, I think SJ State may be the best ticket for this, though among the State U's, I was under the impression that SF State had the strongest B school.

Answer the questions above to get more tailored advice.

I have only visited San Jose State, I have drove near cal state easbay numerous times however..

I will most likely have a roommate so a fraternity would not apply to me..but the whole party scene would be nice, it doesnt have to be on a daily basis but occassionally

The fog @ SF would not bother me. I do not know what I want to do after I am done with school, definately not accounting though...Can't stand it..I work for a bank right now (WAMU), so I dont know if that would help...I want to do something related to financing I believe, whether its work for a company like Fidelity, Charles Schwab, maybe something of that sort...I always wanted to be walking around downtown san francisco with a briefcase haha, so something white collar most likely...

Out of curiousity, why would you dislike living in the Silicon valley?

I'm looking for a good mixture between social life, good/great business school, good/great city...

Appreciate the help

I would say it's between Cal State East Bay and San Francisco State. SF State might be better for your major (it has a bigger department in businesses and related subjects), but you're right, the housing is crazy. I don't know if any of the other places would cost that much less though. Most of the Bay Area is crazy in real estate. The only reason I'm not saying San Jose is that I've heard it's more in the sciences than business.

Visit them all first though! I think Stockton is most like San Jose and Hayward. San Francisco is entirely different.

Yea, I dont care if the city is like Stockton. I do not mind something completely different. I would love to live in San Francisco. I would have to find a roommate there however.

^^^

I think it's kind of decided: if you'd love to live in SF, you'd probably hate SJ State.

Someone who knows told me Cal State East Bay has a great business program with more one-on-one attention than SF State. Same didn't know about SJ State's program. But pointed out that she hated San Jose, probably for the same reasons I would.

I think socially there could be a great benefit of going to SJ State -- fraternities/sororities -- if that is your cup of tea.

I also think SJ State feeds a lot of people into Silicon Valley companies and I believe that intern opps would be better.

Having said these things, opps for living on campus or closeby are said to be many at SF State.

If I was to go based on the school and only the school, not the city, not the social atmosphere.. which one of the three would provide the best business program? Also, is there a big difference between the three, academically, in terms of reputation, easier to get employed? I plan on living in the bay area after school, or somewhere close

SJSU business program actually has a pretty good rep. A lot of silicon valley employers recruit from there.
CS East Bay is pretty much near suburbia...not much around for a college kid.

I don't have much to contribute, except to say that: hey, I live in Hayward! And yes, there is pretty much no nightlife/social scene.

I don't know, and there doesn't seem to be a lot of folks who want to step up and answer your questions. I can tell you that local schools always have advantages in terms of at least some hiring. Meaning if you think you might want to work in Sili Valley, go to SJS.

As someone above said, I think SJS has a pretty good rep. Use the network of alumni and get yourself hired out of SJS, if this is your only consideration.

By contrast, SF State is a good school in a great city, but the opportunities to get hired simply aren't going to be as numerous, I think.
