Tough time deciding if I want to enroll (in need of advice please)

Hello,

I recently got admitted by alternate choice, was put in BS:ACE-Consumer Economics & Finance.

My problem is that I ultimately would want to be an accountant and earn a CPA, which would require me to switch into the business school.

My question is, is switching majors doable? I guess a better question is, would it be reasonable for me to infer that I could obtain a 3.5+ my first year coming out of a competitive high school from the north shore of Chicago?

Any responses would be greatly appreciated, I'm in need of advice. Thanks.

You should not go to UIUC with the belief that you will be able to transfer to business even if you get a 3.5 average first year. Business is the hardest college to transfer into and usually only about half those that request it are taken, and though having a high GPA is a necessity, it is not a guarantee of transfer into business. Yes, you may be able to make a 3.5 average and, if so, you will have a chance for the transfer but it is a crapshoot.

Thanks for the response drusba.

So if you were in my position, and were also a Direct Admit for the Kelley School of Business, would you personally take that route instead?

i am also having a very difficult time. i want to be an engineer, and i didn’t get into the engineer school.

These are personal choices but one must consider that if you have certainty of desired program elsewhere why risk not getting it by choosing UIUC on the hope of being able to transfer which is not guaranteed.

Engineering is both “hard” and easy to transfer into. It is hard because it has minimum GPA requirements (usually ranging from 3.0 to 3.3 depending on major) and you need to take those math and science courses in freshman year that an engineering student would normally take and get A’s and B’s in those courses. If you actually meet minimum requirements you have very good chance of being allowed to transfer but meeting those requirements are not easy, e.g., some of those math, chemistry and physics courses see many bite the dust because they are unable to get A’s and B’s in them.

I’d go to Kelley because it is safer that way, plus it is wayyyy cheaper. But that’s just me.
If you want to go to UIUC, you can have my spot in the business school
I won’t be attending.
