This year has been extremely competitive for admissions. Many extremely accomplished students in my school have been deferred or even rejected from top schools that students from last years class got in with less credentials. For example, last year a student ranked 30/350 and a 1400 on SAT was accepted early to cornell and this year a student ranked 14/311 with a 1590/1600 did not get in early, he was actually rejected. Other rejections include MIT, 2 Stanfords, Duke, Boston College, Georgetown, and others. Is this just my school?

This is happening at my school as well. And we usually do extremely well at top colleges.

Its not all bad though. Someone in my class got into Harvard.

Well, that's because everyone is eyeing for a place at ives ives and only ives. Most people do not choose college that "fits" them. They shop for colleges basing in only on their prestige. Unless this trend reverses, admissions to top colleges will be even tougher next year.

Well. The saying is that college admissions will just continue to get harder, until 2008 at least.

My school got totally slaughtered in early admissions this year, absolutely no one out of the 11 kids that applied early decision/action to any big name schools in the top 30 got in. A lot of people were shocked and guidance is puzzled. All of the applicants were definitely qualified in my opinion, but I guess it just moreover proves the gambling one does in college admissions.

why 2008??

My school and church are having their best admissions in years...
we have an Amherst, Harvard, Swarthmore, Wellesley, Sarah lawrence, and three (3!!!) Skidmore EDs, and my class is only 32 people, this is crazy, 1/4 are already in college!

2008 population bubble......you know like the baby boomers.

The population of college-going HS graduates will peak in 2008 or 2009. This population has increased to record-setting highs every year for the past several, creating an increasingly competitive environment. While the bubble will start subsiding a bit past 2008 or 2009, the population will still be as high as it is now for some time to come, so don't look for the demand side of this economic equation to change much.

yeah... admissions has been horrendous for our school so far. EVERYONE has gotten deferred. 5/6 deferred to Stanford (1 rejected), 1 deferred to Yale, 1 to MIT, 1 to Harvard..... we got a URM into Harvard though.

No one can quantify the quality of EC's and essays except an admissions officer. Just because someone has good scores does not mean they will be accepted. Most people don't seem to realize this. And just because you think an applicant's EC's and essays are phenonemal, an admissions officer might not have been sold. Take teacher recs into account as well.

At my public school, one person applied early to U of Chicago--they were accepted. His rank was probably around 65/390, with a 29 or 30 on the ACT (That's our Wisconsin flavor.) He's a hilarious, creative and vulgar sort of prick.

Anyway like 25 people in my class are going to UW-Madison, while half of them are probably going into the workforce.

our school for stanford EA had 3 accepted, 3 deferred and 2 rejected....also someone got in for swimming

It's been a tough year for my HS too. Our asian sensation got deferred at Harvard. Only one (maybe another) got into Stanford SCEA. Two years ago we had 9 get in total. All of us got deferred at Georgetown. One got rejected at Pomona (he had a lot of great ec's for our school). One rejected from Yale (probably not too much of a surprise, but still). Our smartest math and science female student got deferred at MIT. One got deferred from Brown. Everyone is now scared ****less that some of our top students didn't get into some top schools in the early round. Hopefully there are lots of thick envelopes on April 1st, especially for all of us that are deferred. We're gonna have a deferree party.

It's been tough at my school, as well.

same here. only one into columbia out of about 7 that applied early.

My school:

1/2- MIT
2/2 Brown PLME
1/2 Columbia
1/3 Cornell
1/1 Boston C
0/2 Pton

this one girl got a 2390 and maintained a high GPA. yet stanford rejected her.

anything can happen, even if you seem like the perfect applicant.

i agree.. practically no one got early admission at my skool. This one kid, ranked 1, 1580 out of 1600 on SAT, 800 on SAT II, OVEr the line GPA, 4 and 5 on AP got rejected from stanford.. now how harsh is that?? pretty lame..
