I've got the generic tour and residence housing tours scheduled, but I'm wondering what i should do outside of these official tours. I'm sure there's tons to do in Austin, so where should I begin? I'm staying in a hotel right near campus and probably won't have a car with me. I'll be there for 2 nights and 1 full day.

I'm really hoping to get a feel for the student body/activities and social life at Austin through this tour. I figure i'll probably spend the majority of the day touring the campus, but what should I do at night? What are some good places to eat at that many students would go to? What are some of the local hangout areas for the students?

I'm so used to visiting colleges that are literally placed in the ghetto or middle of nowhere. I'm hoping the city of austin is as great as it seems!

Yeah, I’ve heard of 6th street. Any particular bars/restaurants that would give a good local feeling? Or a few places on or near 6th street for some good dining?

Without a car, it will be limited where you can go. I would recommend
A stroll on the Drag-Guadalupe st that runs along the western edge of UT campus. There are “good eats” places and shops where students hang out. Go to the Co-op store to buy some souvenirs.
Tour the UT tower. Reservation is required in advance.
Many students go to the Pluckers on 2222 Rio Grande that is within walking distance from campus.

Have fun in Austin! There are many things to do and places to visit but more time and transportation are needed.

Info about Cactus cafe events and UT tower reservation are on the same page. There is also something about bowling and billiard in a place called Underground, I have no clue what it is.

Thanks for all the replies, I’m really excited about my trip. What are some things kids in austin do on the weekends in the city? Or, thinking outside of the city, what are some trips people make from austin for activities? like how close are the nearest beaches?

There are swimming holes and tubing in San Marcos. Or you can go to South Padre during Spring break.
Read the counselors’ pages. It’s all there. All the parks and hiking places, festivals and swimming holes, museums and places to eat.
