If money were no object, where would you stay when visiting the ivies, Amherst, Williams, Middlebury, UVA, Wellesley, Emory, Vandy and any you'd care to share!

We stayed at the Hanover Inn when visiting Dartmouth, and it was perfect. It's a pricey but adorable colonial inn directly across the street from the campus. Other than that, everywhere we stayed was strictly utilitarian. When in NYC, make sure that you're near a subway stop. The day that we went to Princeton we walked out the door of our NYC hotel, down the subway to Grand Central Station (I think it was), took the train basically to the front of campus, and got back to NYC in time for a very nice dinner. Actually, the same goes when visiting Boston/Cambridge - stay near a T stop. I've never stayed there, but my parents really enjoyed the Charles Hotel in Harvard Square, which is 1-2 blocks from the T.

Middlebury: Swift House Inn or Waybury Inn (which was the inn featured in "Newhart" and was where Robert Frost would regularly take his dinner).

If money were no object - for Vanderbilt, stay at the Marriott adjacent to campus or Lowe's, just across the street from the admissions office. There is a nice Courtyard just a few blocks from the west side of campus on West End if money becomes more of an object! The Courtyard if right across the street from Midtown Cafe, which is one of my childrens' favorite places to be taken for dinner.

I second 2VU above. We've stayed at the Loew's twice and loved it (somehow must have snagged a great rate). The quality of the service is excellent. We've stayed more often at the Marriott - love the area, the rooms/beds are terrific, and the front desk has been tops. I think the Marriott offers slightly less in terms of amenities, but we're never in residence long enough to miss them.

If money and the greater distance from campus were no object, I'd love to stay at the Hermitage - I've heard great things about it.

For UVA, check out the Boar's Head Inn.

For Cornell, stay at the Statler on campus. Money better not be an issue though. If you are stretching the dollars, go for the Best Western.

Princeton, the Nassau Inn.

Yale ... visiting athletic teams stay at the Trumbull Marriott. I would think that's too far, but it may be a commentary on what's close to campus.

At Emory, you can stay at the Emory Conference Center if you want to be right by the campus--or if you want to stay just a few minutes away there are several nice hotels in Buckhead. The ECC is a nice, standard hotel but it's about a ten minute walk to the Quad. There is a free shuttle and the concierges are wonderful.

Not only do we always stay at the Williamstown Bed & Breakfast, but I'm there right now! It's a lovely place, well run, spotless, great breakfast and right on campus so you can walk everywhere. Bonus for art lovers it's very near the Clark. Reasonably priced too so you can splurge in other places.

Middlebury - Inn on the Green was lovely. My daughter still talks about the delicious continental breakfast delivered to the room.

Columbia: There was a thread about this a while ago. There are a ton of decent small hotels on the upper west side. Pick one.

Yale: I forget who is branding the Holiday Inn - type hotel on Whalley Ave. Functional but fine.

Cornell: Absolutely the on-campus Statler.

Penn: There are a couple of crappy hotels on campus, but if money is really no object stay at the Four Seasons or the Rittenhouse in Center City and walk, subway, trolley bus, or cab the 14 blocks to Penn. The Convention Center Marriott a few blocks farther away sits right on top of the trolley line that will put you in the middle of the Penn campus in 5 minutes.

Dartmouth: Hanover Inn is, indeed, charming and perfect.

Brown: Never stayed over there, but it's reasonably close to downtown Providence. There must be some decent hotels there.

Yale - stay at the New Haven Omni. Nicest hotel and a 2 block walk across the New Haven Green from Old Campus.

Emory:

Emory Conference Center is the best for proximity. If you don't mind being ~5 miles away you have the option of a Ritz Carlton, Four Seasons, Intercontinental, Westin, and soon to be Rosewood.
