So far, I have seen a lot of people on this board advising to change your towels EVERY DAY to avoid getting sick. It sounds like a good idea, but how is it even possible?? Even if you have five sets of towels (one each for hair & body?) you'll still have to be constantly washing them to be able to have a new set each day! How many of you actually do this?

It'd be impossible to change towels everyday for a girl... I use four towels each day(big bath-body towel, hand towel, hair towel, and face cloth) and then times that by seven... that'd mean 28 towels being stored in my ittty bitty dorm room. I have two sets of towels and I do wash once a week. I'm fine.

... sheets however are a different topic. Most people I know don't wash their sheets more than once ever 2-3 months. Sorry, but thats gross. I wash my sheets every week and then my pillows and comforter every other week.

I have 8 towels, I use one towel per shower, I do laundry once every week or two. I think it's actually pretty reasonable to keep this number of towels in my dorm room. I guess everyone has a different style.

I have three towels, and change them once a week. When I use them I'm clean, so I don't really see the issue. But I also don't live in an exceptionally hot, humid place, so I'm sure that figures into it. I do a load of towels (and fleece pajama pants, etc) once every three weeks

I can't use the same towel twice. Never. It's just one of those things that grosses me out beyond all belief. I'm bringing a bunch of bath towels with me, both deep pink and white, so if I only have a load of whites I can do laundry and get some towels clean. However, I only use 1 bath towel per shower, because I use a loofah for body wash and use my towel for my hair as well after I get into my robe. I don't need a washcloth, because I wash my face in the shower.

I have 14 towels. Since I sometimes take two showers during a day (like if I go to the gym, for example), so I know I have enough for two showers per day for a week. Granted, I don't take two showers every single day, so I usually have enough that if I don't get to wash my towels over a weekend I'll have enough to keep me going through the beginning of the week (I'll certainly find time to wash them by then).

Washcloths I use for two face washings. One day I use one side and the next I use the reverse. With a bath towel, I typically use both sides each day so I have no choice but to retire them after one shower.

As for hand towels, I always put two out at a time, and I only use one side of one towel for when I have any sort of acne med on my hands. This way only one small portion of the towel is bleached if it's a bleachable color. Usually I leave these up for a week.

Someone brought up sheets. If you have skin that is prone to acne, make sure you change your pillowcase weekly. You WILL break out if you don't. I like to change my sheets each week, and my comforter gets washed pretty frequently too.

Speaking of acne, watch out when buying blue colored stuff if you use any sort of benzoyl-peroxide based cream. Blue becomes fuschia, trust me.

Sheets - I change sheets & pillowcases once a week now, and I plan on continuing that...Comforters can wait a little longer.

i dont kno how to wash clothes.

I guess I've never thought about this! I do my own laundry at home about once a week and I have about 10 towels, 4 hand towels, and a couple washcloths. I don't use a washcloth in the shower - I use a loofah on my body and wash my face with my hands. So I hardly ever use those. I retire all my towels and washcloths after one use, but for some reason use my hand towels two or three times. Maybe its because you can use different areas each time, though I can't say I always make an extra effort to do that. Of course, if I wipe anything on the hand towel, like lotion or toothpaste, I retire it immediately.

Is it a big deal, space- and convienence-wise, to bring that amount of towels? I haven't even thought about it.

hmmm yeah i change my towel about once every two weeks, so i guess im dirty compared to these people. My feelings are well you're clean when you use the towel.....I do change my hand towel and washcloth about once a week.

I have 5 towels at college, defintely don't have space for any more

how weird! i was just wondering about this the other day. i can't use towels more than once either, but i also really dislike doing laundry. HMM tough decision then.

and something else: where do you guys actually keep your bath stuff in the dorm room? i assume you have a system so the towels and shampoo bottles and etc don't get everything wet.

For pretty much all my life, I used a towel a week. I recently started changing towels every 2 days, and I notice a difference. I no longer get random acne. Its simply amazing

my cousin kept them in a shower caddy that had holes in the bottom to let the water out. Once she was done with her towel she'd dry the stuff off and put it back on the top shelf of her closet.

I keep clean towels in the top of my closet along with all my bath stuff, I just dry it before putting it back. Dirty towels go in my laundry basket.

Me neither, well I have a vague idea. My mom does them for me though :)

pick out delicates - stuff where the tag says 'hand wash' or 'dry clean only'. wash them the way their tag says to!
whites & light colors go together.
darks & vibrant colors go together.

spot treat stains with stuff like 'tide to go'

pop one color chunk (lights or darks) in the washing machine until full, (DON'T PACK DOWN THE CLOTHES!) on normal cycle, warm - not hot -water. let it do it's thing, then poof! you're done.

the best advice?
when in doubt, read the tag.

I don't really sort by colors. I wash underwear, socks and towels in hot water, because hot water gets things the cleanest. I wash pajamas, bras, and my big T-shirts in warm water. Everything else goes in cold. Of course, dark and bright clothes get washed only with like colors the first time to keep them from coloring other things, and I always wash all whites seperately, with a little bleach.

kk06 forgot to mention that you have to put detergent in the washing machine. I recommend pouring a cup full in before putting the clothes in to avoid getting all the detergent on one of two things. It just feels like everything else wouldn't get as clean, plus some clothes can be discolored by undiluted detergent sitting on it.

Oh, I forgot to say why I wash a lot of my clothes in cold water -- it keeps them from shrinking. I also dry all my clothes, except underwear and socks, on delicate, which is low heat, for the same reason.

haha, yeah detergent's always good.
props if you use softener too.

I'm thinking of switching over to dryer sheets for college though...one less liquid I have to deal with. Also, when I have a small load I usually combine towels, underwear, and non-shrinking colorsafe items too. Makes it easier. How often do most people do laundry in college? My mom keeps telling me I'll be surprised at how many times I will wear one pair of jeans....

this is one of the things that im worried about the most. do most dorms have washer/dryer units somewhere? or are there places nearby to go to get it done? i'm just really lazy but i dont like sleeping on the same old sheets or using the same towels over and over and over again
