Towson University

What can anyone tell me about Towson University in Maryland. I know that it's a regional state school and has an alright reputation in Maryland. My brother just got in and is deciding whether or not he wants to go.

What is your brother’s major?

Why was Towson on his application list to begin with?

Sorry that my original post was so short, but I was a bit rushed. Anyways, from what I know about Towson is that it is a larger public university in Maryland (We’re from Maryland). However, what we don’t know is what the overall feel is. At the school that I go to, there is very much a college town around the University. Is the town of Towson similar in that regard? Meaning, does the town cater to the students?

My brother is going in as some sort of education major, not sure what type yet (maybe elementary or P.E). Towson was originally on his list because it is known for it’s production of teachers in the state of Maryland and the fact that it is in-state.

His other choice is Salisbury. Does anyone know how the two compare in regards to academics?

Towson used to be the Teacher’s College for Maryland, so it has a long, solid history of training teachers who go on to make their careers in MD. Chances are that many of the teachers at the public schools near you received either their BA or MEd there. It is a good choice for your brother’s career goals. Towson is in the northern suburbs of Baltimore, and has decent public transportation connections to wherever a student might want to travel in the greater Baltimore area (and easy connections to DC, etc. as well). At a barbecue yesterday, Happykid (transferring to Towson this fall from MC-Rockville) was told “Everyone who goes to Towson just loves it.”

Happykid has visited friends at Salisbury, but was not interested in applying because it is a much smaller and less interesting city for her. This is a kid who needs a bagel place, a pho place, a Chinese supermarket, and a Trader Joe’s right nearby. The students we know at Salisbury just love it and would not trade it for Towson or even UM-CP.

Unless there is some reason why your brother can’t visit at least one of these campuses, he really should do so. That will help him make his final decision.

Good luck to both of you!

Towson is a good school & worth going to. I visited when I was applying to colleges. Now I have a friend who goes there and loves it.

My opinion when I visited, was that the campus was pretty nice. Although it’s apparently a large school, it had a surprisingly small feel to it. The campus itself is nice, but I wouldn’t say it’s located in a particularly nice area. When you step off campus, there isn’t much surrounding, besides some suburban malls and chain restaurants.

They have a big stadium, which I went to once for an NCAA lacrosse tournament. It’s a sports-oriented school.

If your brother is considering it, I REALLY recommend that he visit it first. This school was one of my top choices, but when I visited, I decided it just wasn’t for me & I ended up not even applying.
It’s a good school, but sometimes you just need to get a feel for what it’s like by visiting it yourself.
