Anyone know about the speech pathology program at Towson? also any other input about the school would be appreciated.

My D was interested in Towson. They do not accept students into the speech pathology major. Students can apply to the major after completing 30 credits. We liked the campus and the drive (from NYC area). Shuttle buses run to nearby colleges and to inner harbor. D decided on James Madison, but Towson was high on her list.

What did your daughter prefer about James Madison?

Do any schools admit students directly into the speech pathology major?

How difficult is it to get into graduate school in speech pathology? Do schools favor their own undergraduates who apply to their graduate school?

My D fell in love with JMU. She was accepted directly into the communication disorders major. The campus is beautiful and the price was right. We toured Towson during the summer when few students were there. We saw JMU in full swing. That may have been a factor.

My daughter applied to Towson and really liked the campus. Several teachers with whom I work graduated from Towson and loved it! They have nothing but good things to say about it.

However, like hayze, my daughter has decided to go to James Madison University. We went to admitted students’ day and she was sold!

How difficult is it to move from the undergraduate communications disorders degree into the graduate school at the same school. Do schools favor their own students?

I can’t comment on the speech pathology program. But, H and I are Towson alums and we are hoping neither of our kids applies to Towson.

Sure, the education was fine, plain, whatever. We were both Mass Comm majors and have been gainfully employed in the Baltimore area since graduating in the late 80’s.

It’s the blah campus and student life that left us underwhelmed. Communter school. Suitcase school. Apathetic support of athletics (except lax). The school’s relationship with bordering neighborhoods is tense. Campus parking is horrible. State budget cuts are being felt.

Neither H nor I had any contact with an advisor when were at Towson. Looking back, our time there reminds me of a “sink or swim” experience. Navigating the hassle of government bueracracy (sp -1) is what I remember most, not great lessons and enlightenment.

Sorry if this is not what you hoped to hear.

My son went to Towson, and I got to know the school fairly well. Check out my college visit post found in the College Visit section of CC. I wrote a lot about my son’s experiences there, both good and bad.

I’m not sure about moving into the graduate program. You can email the dept and they might be able to help.

I also know someone who was unimpressed by the school. She went there as a freshman, before realizing that almost everyone went home every weekend. After the first semester, she transferred to Pitt, and is much happier there. Just make sure that you know what you’re getting into.
