Track drops my GPA, Should I take it still?

Hypothetically, if I receive straight A years (Sophomore And Junior) taking track and field with one AP class, I would receive a 4.14 GPA. On the other hand, If I do not take a 7th period track and field class, i would receive a 4.16. This would add up to an UC GPA of 4.42 w/o track and field and a 4.36 w/ track and field. Would the EC of track and field be worth the .06 GPA reduction? (5 AP classes in total) (1 in Sophomore year, 4 in Junior Year)

I personally do not think a .06 GPA reduction would make the biggest difference, especially because many schools LOVE athletes.

The UC GPA calculation will not include the grade from track.
It is possible that the track grade has implications for your high school rank, depending on how your high school calculates rank. Check with your HS counselor.

at many schools, whether you participate in track or not will not have any effect whatsoever, because the adcoms recalculate your GPA according to whatever rubric they use anyway.

For example, some schools recalculate your GPA considering academic courses only; some schools recalculate all grades on a 4.0 scale, and then assign a separate score for rigor of curriculum, etc.

The question is, do you enjoy track? That should be your only consideration.

Thanks for your help guys. I will still be continuing track and field.

As a Track and Field participant, I understand your pain of being in Track and Field. It’s a kick in the butt but is definitely worthwhile. Track takes a lot of commitment and hard work. Hopefully, College admission officers will see that and I bet they will. Good luck in your studies and Track! :)

Always better to do what you love doing
