track recruiting for ivies?

i've got a buddy who just took first in our state in the 800 outdoor. really smart kid, great in math and sciences, with a ~4.1 GPA and around a 32 ACT and he's in the top 10% of our class. as a current ivy recruit for a different sport, i decided to direct him towards ivy track. anybody have any insight on how ivies recruit for track--AI, etc.? thanks a ton.

Have him write a letter to the track coach at the school(s) in which he is interested expressing his interest and detailing his performances and honors earned - both athletic and academic. That should start the ball rolling.

i did already; though i had to do so for a few schools, most of the ones that i’m really interested in came to me, but i have a bit of experience of that department. i’m just wondering more about the particulars of recruiting for track especially. is the AI lower or higher for track athletes? are recruited applicants expected to be more in the high-high band (top 5%, 33 ACT+)?

My understanding is each school has a quota of recruiting slots in each band (more closer to the typical admit) and can decide how to split the slots up across sports … and then the coach can decide within a sport. Some schools will place more emphasis on T&F than others … I’d suggest looking at recent Heptaganol championships to see has the strongest programs. Within a program some will place more emphasis on mid-distance runners than others. As others have mentioned the best when to find out interest to contact the schools … there are only 8 … filling out the 8 interest forms would probably take less time than researching trying to figure out who might be the most interested.

“i did already; though i had to do so for a few schools, most of the ones that i’m really interested in came to me…”

Is this for you or your “buddy?”

as i stated above… i’m a recruit for a different sport (baseball).

Most or all of the Ivies have on online questionnaire for potential recruits at the athletic websites. Urge your friend to fill those out. Depending how fast his 800m is, the 32 ACT may or may not be adequate. The only way to know is to ask the individual coaches and determine is their roster has the need for another 800er.
