Track Recruiting??

I'm a junior (girl) interested in running for a D3 school in college..but I don't know when I should contact the coaches. Should I send in my info now, or wait until the spring season so I have better times?

And by contacting the coaches, does it necessarily mean that I HAVE to run at the school if I apply and they "want" me, or can I back out of it after being "recruited"? (if they actually would want me, hah..)

thanks! :)

It would be pretty tacky to back out after being recruited, but it does happen. Someone near and dear to me never got to run due to injury, although he was a recruit.
You should contact the coaches now and then update with your spring times. Do you do CC or just track? You should look at the team rosters and check out the high school times of the team members to see where you stack up. That will give you an idea of how likely you are to be recruited.

I just do track (sprints), and I've checked out some of the colleges' rosters that I'm interested in, and I'm nearly equivalent to many

Yep I'm also a track runner but would be bored and hardly have any competition athletically at the D3 level even though there are some schools i'm looking at the D3 level. I just filled out their recruit form on the teams website and they repond fairly quickly. So i reccomend showing interest real early so begin now. I only regret that they contact me almost EVERYDAY!! So yea you should talk to coaches now if your interested in the schools and just fill out the recruit questionnaire on the teams websit and they'll be in contact.

Recruited D3 athletes are not required to play their sport.

If you're a junior, you should send your times/distances now, so that you are on the coaches' radar when you begin visiting schools. D was very strong in a number of events (sprints, jumps, throws), posting numbers that would make the top 10 list at some D1 schools. She was heavily recruited by a number of top LACs - - in many cases coaches called her before she even completed the student athelete form on the college's web site.

One caution - - if a student is being recruited by a LAC/uni, s/he cannot participate in on-campus programs that are more than 2 days (I think). I remember D being selected for several on-campus programs for high-achieving urm students. Students could choose to attend one of three weekends. In each case, if D wanted to meet with a coach, she had to attend the 2day program - - not the 3 day program.

Good luck.

Thanks everyone!
Also do you think it would be all right if i add in the "other info" section of the questionnaire that i'm not absolutely sure that i'll run track or not? or would that seem like a bad idea?

Get in touch with coaches, send them your times, visit the colleges as much as you possibly can. My friend just got recruited for D3 lax at a top LAC - with a hefty "academic" scholarship, I may add - by doing all those things.
