Can someone tell me if Boston College gives track scholarships for Men’s Track? If so, what is the average amount?
Since they are ACC I’m sure they do. http://bceagles.com/index.aspx?path=mxctrack
Moving to recruited athletes forum
BC does award track scholarships. Track is a tricky sport for scholarships. Some of the best will get 100% while others get a minimal amount. Knowing the average won’t do you any good unless you know if you are good enough to get a big chunk of the available money.
You may want to look at this. http://www.athleticscholarships.net/trackandfieldscholarships.htm
My son went through the college recruiting process in the fall of 2014. He spoke with BC several times. Something may have changed, but as of two years ago, the coach told my son that:
- BC is the only non-scholarship men’s track program in the ACC. I had heard they offered one scholarship but the coach said zero.
- They prioritize and build their program around the 4x400, 800 and distance/cross country. I don't think they even have anyone in the field events on the men's team.
- They ask their recruited athletes to apply regular decision.
- The coach can support a few athletes each year through admissions.
Wow that is some interesting news. I heard that does happen with some sports at some colleges but the information is not that easy to find. My son is trying to decide between Amherst and BC but this may be a huge factor. Where did your son end up if I may ask?
@collegecounts – my son ended up at an Ivy but he cast a wide net from an athletic perspective to include everything from D3 schools through power conference universities.
With regard to your comment about the difficulty of finding information about the various programs, the best source is directly from the coaches. If you are not already doing it, have your son fill out the recruiting questionnaires for the schools he is interested in learning about and send a separate email to the head/position coach at the school expressing interest and asking some basic questions. The bullet points in my prior post are paraphrased from an email exchange my son had with one of the coaches at BC.
To your original question about track scholarships, money can be hard to come by. Getting a very small partial scholarship, or even just money for books, is a very common outcome as the coach has to spread his precious few scholarships across a big team – sprinters, distance, jumpers, throwers, etc. In the end, based on the schools my son targeted and his athletic profile, we essentially made an athletic scholarship a nice-to-have element of the decision process as it was clear the money would not be significant.
BC does not offer any Men’s Track scholarships. Hence why they scored zero points at the ACC Outdoor Championships last year. Their highest finish in an individual event was 15th.
So they apparently need a “team” for some headcount purpose, but are not funding any athletic scholarships for it.
^I can confirm this as well. My son really liked BC, but the running program was seriously lacking. After fully funding basketball, football and hockey, there is no $$ or love left for boys XC or track. There is not even a track on the campus. It’s a shame.
