Tracking Application Materials?

I know that not all schools do this, but is there any way to track the status of your application at NYU?
I know boston university does it, for example. and it was really useful because it let me see that they had not yet received my financial forms or transcript from my school!
this really worries me! will they not consider me if they dont have all this stuff by the postmark deadline? because i sent it all in way early!!!

ditto roddyapp, i sent all my NYU stuff about 2 weeks ago but still have not received any sort of confirmation that my app has even been received.

any word on this?

hmmmm i wonder. hopefully somebody will come along who knows the answer to this. if i find out, i will for sure message you nutterbutter!

the most we ever got was MAYBE a postcard. Also realized their offices have been closed since last week. The offices reopen on Monday and they will be sorting thru all the stuff and downloading your applications from the common app.

Then in late march, we got a letter that said (I saved the letter):
"I have two pieces of good news for you and one piece of bad news. The good news is that you are being accepted to NYU and will receive your acceptance packet shortly. The other good news is that it appears you may need financial assistance to attend NYU and we will be able to help you. The bad news is that, in reviewing your file, we realized that we have not yet received a completed FAFSA from you."

Well, my heart stopped because I knew I had done the FAFSA by the deadline. It turns out at they had my son's Social security number wrong in their system (even though it had been put on the common app correctly - I checked. They fixed that and said okay wait for your letter. They would NOT tell us any more details. Got the letter 2 week later and there was 30K in scholarship money! We felt like we hit the college lottery!

I just found a letter we got dated Feb 4. It basically said that we got your stuff, we'll let you know if something is missing. They had info at the bottom where I didn't notice that they had his SS# wrong. So if you get a letter, check the info at the bottom to make sure they have your info right. Learn from my mistake

wow, sueinphilly! that's incredible! that's so lucky for your son and thanks so much for all of your help. much appreciated!

if i may ask, what is your son studying at NYU?

Politics/history. He is a Cas Sophomore.
His Sat score was 2250 (math 790, verbal 740, writing 720)

My EFC is about 11K. He has subsized stafford loan, perkins loan (6900 between those 2 this year), work study of almost 4k (he's working at the Palladium gym thru the break not sure if he'll earn the full 4K during the year).

even with 30K in aid, there is a lot of money to cover.

sueinphilly thats so great!
"two pieces and one piece of bad news"
haha. i think thats really funny

sueinphilly, I am awaiting response from financial aid office on my appeal for more merit scholarships. My mom, a single parent, definitely can't afford a 30K a year. I got about 20K out of the way. I'm working really hard to get more from NYU and third party scholarships. Any advice from you would be great. Thanks a lot!

A) what is your EFC?
B) what did they offer you? Perkins, Stafford (could be max of 5500 for freshmen of which 3500 could be subsidized), do you qualify for Pell Grant are you a NY resident and could get a TAP grant?

NYU is not known for meeting full need, but in our case, with my son taking Stafford, Perkins loans and work study and my EFC it works out that my contribution is about my EFC

Not sure what to say about an appeal. How much more more would it take for it to be affordable for you?

The thing about 3rd party scholarships is that they are most likely for 1 year and then you'd have a problem for next year. Also consider that the cost of college will increase each year.

I am out of state. Here's the breakdown.
CAS scholarship 12K, Trustee scholarship 5K, Local 3rd party 3K (1500 per semester for 4 years). My mom's EFC is 10K. The rest will be in loans. I want to help my mom lower her EFC. She's still paying off our mortgage and a car.

Your contribution:
Stafford is probably 5500 (max for freshman)
Perkins is probably at least 2400
Work study could be as high as 4000 (that is money you earn while you are in school, they don't hand it to you for just showing up)
that's almost 12K
So that really only another 10K you need. The COA for this year is 52K (and you can bet it will be 54K for 2009-2010)

Your mom is going to have come up with a way to pay something close to 10K. Lots of us have a mortgage (my car is 18 years old, really. It was probably made the same year you were born 1991!)

Good luck with your appeal and let us know how it turns out.

Just a note for the subject of this thread haha:
Yesterday I did get an NYU email saying they'd received my app. They don't offer an Applicant Tracking system per se but they do give you an NYU ID number which they will probably use in the future.

:D

sueinphilly, I got 6K more after my appeal. I'm happy!

great news....

NYUMinute, how did you go about appealing the financial aid? Did you fill out form, write a letter, or call them up?

I called FA office.
