Not sure if this is the right area for this question. My S is 2014 High School class applying for fall admission.
He has a lot of volunteer activity on his application / resume through several high school organizations. But what I see on so many stats listings is a record of 200, 300, 400+ hours of volunteer service. I don’t believe this is something my S was encouraged to record and keep track of, so I don’t know that he listed X hours, because it would have been an estimate / guess.
If my younger students want to document service hours, is there some tool or way to keep track, document, record these volunteer hours?
What are other students using to track volunteer hours?
Although many students do keep track of service hours for purposes of awards and honors outside the college app process, those totals aren’t important when it comes time to really prepare applications. The common app asks only for a number of hours per week and weeks per year for each activity an applicant chooses to report. Some students consolidate several volunteer activities into a single line item and aggregate the hours, others list their volunteer positions one by one. Either way, students estimate these hourls and number of week figures and no verification is necessary for purposes of college admissions. When a student volunteers far more hours in summer than winter in the same organization, a rough average for hours per week can be entered in the common app form. No total number of volunteer hours is ever reported to colleges through the common app.
