Traffic

I've been wondering about this...how do UCLA students deal with the traffic of the surrounding areas? I come from a smaller town with roads that are fairly open; I can get to where I need to go in about 20 minutes at most (from one end of town to another). I've driven in the LA area as well as some other large metro areas and I feel frustrated whenever there's a huge traffic jam in the city or on the freeway.

So I understand there will probably a large shock there, but is it easy to get over after awhile? It seems like I'd be wasting a lot of opportunities to explore things if I didn't drive...

You live in LA, you deal with traffic. You'll get used to it.

^ agreed

::stupid 10 character minimum::

Um...as a norcal girl, I just have to say...I wouldn't want to drive at UCLA. I'd rather deal with public transportation then deal with crazy LA drivers myself (no offense). The bus system really isn't that difficult to navigate and is fairly convenient.
And lets not even start with the parking situation

well technically UCLA students who live in the dorms (and maybe even in the apartments) dont really need to deal with traffic, everything needed is within walking distance... or short drive. let your friends who are driving you deal with LA traffic ;)

If you don't drive during rush hour--7:30am to 9:00am and about 4:00pm to 7:00pm--you'd be amazed at how far you can get in half an hour.
If you do have to drive in rush hour, you need to teach yourself not to stress. Just accept that it's going to take you X time to get there, pop in some non-stress CD's, and chill.

However, if you're living on or near campus, I don't think the aggravation of a car is worth it. Parking on-campus is prohibitive, parking near campus is a frustrating exercise, and why buy the aggravation. Several of the Santa Monica bus lines, in particular, terminate at UCLA and you can get around a fair amount by bus if you're going places on the Westside, like Santa Monica itself or the Westside Pavilion mall at Westwood & Pico.

your a dad....and you said chill......sweet

i think thedad is the coolest dad ever

UCLA also has its own transportation system as well that runs around campus and up to Wilshire Blvd as well.

Not to mention there are buses that take you to the Grove (one of the coolest places ever) and other locations.

TheDad also has over 1400 posts, which means TheDad is spending entirely too much time on Internet message boards.

^ lol please 1400 is nothing. A friend of mine has over 10,000 posts on the MyUCLA forums haha.

DrSpammo doesn't count (hint: consider his username...).

lol no its not spammo - although he did pass up moochfish (who i was referring to) a while ago.

how much does homercles have?

At the most recent count, Homercles has 9806 posts. Good Lord.

back to the op, I drive to UCLA every friday

traffic is atrocious but I've learned to use alternate routes to get around the bulk of it. Its just that there is ALWAYS traffic on wilshire ALWAYS, and it can get frustrationg. also, parking on campus runs out frequently!

My susgestion is to get good speakers installed in your car, it seems that at certain parts of the day, everybody in LA is driving!

An iPod in the car is your best friend.

Thedad fit the mark on the hours of traffic. :) In LA, traffic is a way of life-- learn it, love it (or avoid it).

Don't drive anywhere.

I live in the dorms and the only time I get in a car is to go home or when I go to retreats or philanthropy events with my fraternity.

Late at night, if you find a friend w/ a car, the traffic isn't bad, anyways.

Public transportations reasonably easy to figure out, too, though I've only taken busses/subway to the LA Convention Center for the Auto Show.

The 405 is notorious for being heavily -HEAVILY- congested during rush hour. The 10 is also very congested during rush hour, as are most other freeways in the Los Angeles Area. Since there are no light rail lines, nor subway lines, not even commuter rail lines in the Westside, Westsiders are left with no choice but to get into their cars;thus, the heavy amount of traffic. Hell, it takes me about an hour to get to UCLA (when it should take no more than 25 minutes, mind you) from my house on the 2 bus on Sunset Boulevard. Both Sunset and Wilshire are busy boulevards that can take you out of the Westwood area if you ever need to.
