Harvard Student Cote K. Laramie '14 Dies | News | The Harvard Crimson

I didn't know Cote, as he is a few years younger than me, but he would've graduated from my house, so as a proud Pfoho alum, this is especially sad news.

Unlike a number of similar events in the past few years, Cote's family has generously shared the cause of death. Usually, when event like this happen, everyone knows--tacitly--that the student committed suicide, but it's never officially announced. An acquaintance in my year also took his own life.

I'm really not sure what to say other than the fact that we need to keep pushing for honesty and openness and support when it comes to issues like depression and potential suicide. I know it's brought up every time something like this happens, and then somehow collective amnesia takes hold because during other times, it's an even more uncomfortable topic and it's not until another suicide before everyone starts muttering the same platitudes....which I'm sad to say is what I'm doing as well.

But...who knew things like gay marriage and an African-American president could be reality even 10 years ago? So...let's start and keep talking.
