So, I was thinking I would take a shot at tranferring into Stanford from NC State as a sophmore and quiet possibly as a junior. I would just like to know what a typical transfer students profile is like. I'm sure it would include a 4.0 gpa, but what other things would be important to increase my chances? I'm sure I will be involved with many clubs like engineers without borders and etc. I quite simply want to transfer in order to attend a school with a great engineering reputation that is closer to all of the great job opportunities that can be found on the west coast. I feel like I will be able talk about how important it is for me to upgrade my undergraduate education in order to pursue my dreams for the future. Is there any more advice that I should consider in order to stick out as one of the 2% accepted transfer students?

There’s really no advice that can be given other than “be amazing.” I’d say that the transfer applicants are a very self-selecting group, given how hard it is to get in as a transfer (so most don’t bother). The fact that the transfer acceptance rate is so low, despite this self-selection, should tell you just how amazing the transfers are; they’re usually more impressive than nearly all the students who get in as freshmen. This past year, IIRC, one transfer student won the Rhodes scholarship, at least one other won a Truman scholarship, etc.

This probably isn’t very helpful, but it’s accurate. All the transfers I’ve known (at least 4) are just amazing. Prove to Stanford that you’re going to change the world and you might stand a chance.

That said, I’m not sure you’re applying for the right reasons. Definitely don’t even think of mentioning “reputation” or anything that suggests it. What is it that Stanford can offer you that NCSU cannot? How are you “upgrading” your education? How will Stanford enable you to pursue your dreams in a way that NCSU can’t? If you can answer these questions well, then you can start to wonder about ways to increase the likelihood of getting in.
