tranferring majors

HI guys...i was wondering if you could transfer from a totally different major like MCS into CIT. Is it possible after you have been admitted? or do they impact the major so it is practically impossible to transfer? thanks

Can be done; you can't apply until second semester of freshman year since you technically don't have a major until then. Generally, you need to have made some significant progress towards your chosen major. For CS, from what I know, this generally means getting an A in 15-211 (3rd semester of programing, called Data Structures and Algorithms). Look over the course catalog at the two majors you're admitted to/interested in and see what overlaps.

I have this same question. Im in for physics... but also liked CS. Does this mean I will need to take some CS classes before i plan to switch? Is freshamn year alot of general classes or are they toward your major.

Do you have any AP credit for computer science? As a CS major, you would need a minor in something, and physics offers a minor. Most likely, the classes you would take as a freshman in physics could at least partially count towards a physics minor if you were in CS.

Well, as a CS major, my schedule was the following:
1st semester:
15-200 second semester of programming
33-111 Physics 1 for Scientists (need 4 science/engineering classes)
21-127 Concepts of Mathematics (discrete math course, required for CS)
76-101 Interp and Argument (English, required for everyone)
21-241 Matrix Algebra (required for CS)
2nd semester:
15-211 Data Structures/Algorithms (3rd semester of programming stuff)
21-259 Calc in 3D (so that I can take computer graphics)
33-112 Physics 2 for Scientists
15-251 Great Theoretical Ideas (required CS class)
85-211 Cognitive Psych (fulfills category humanities requirement)

I already had AP credit for all but 2 humanities courses, the first semester of programming (15-100), and two semesters of calc (which is all that's needed in CS). I'm not sure how general the first year of courses in MCS is; go to CMU's site, click on current students, and look for a link to course catalog. In it there are the requirements for your major and demo schedules, which should give you an idea of what you would take.

If you want to transfer to CS, from what I've heard, I would suggest taking 15-100, 15-200, 15-211, and 21-127 (prereq for 15-211) before applying to transfer, unless you have a 4.0.
