As you can probably tell from the title, I’m transgender, and I was wondering if anyone would be willing to describe the LGBT, especially T, scene at UCSB. I’ve read that the school will provide hormones, assist in paying for transitional surgeries, and has gender neutral housing, but I was wondering if anyone else knew more. Thank you!
Hi, I can answer something about this. Although I am not trans myself (I’m gay if it helps!) I know a few trans students at our school (and we have a professor or two who are trans as well). There is a specific club for trans students I believe (S.A.S.S. http://wgse.sa.ucsb.edu/SGD/Organizations/), along with a handful of other lgbtq clubs that are actually quite strong and active, more than I expected when I came here, it seeming to be the “whitest” and least diverse of the UC’s. That probably fueled the LGBTQ students here to be that much more active haha. I know that one of the Co-Chairs/Founders for oSTEM’s UCSB Chapter is trans (and is also a chair of S.A.S.S.) and we have a fair amount of famous trans guest speakers, under our Trans Revolution series (https://www. facebook .com/events/1479980508974416/). Let me know if you have any other questions :).
