I applied to Cal State University San Bernardino for Spring 2011 as a lower division transfer, as they are accepting them. My academic record at my previous community college is all bad. I have quite a few F's and W's because I hardly went to class and didn't know I had to withdraw. Fast forward four years, I started attending another community college near me and have gotten good grades.

When one has his/her transcript from the previous institution sent to the current, does the current pick the grades that can be used and transfer them to the current transcript or does it include ALL of the grades from the last school?

Each institution sets its own policy about this. Usually the only thing that shows on the new record is that X number of credits have been transferred as the equivalent of course Y or to meet requirement Z. Sometimes, however, all of the courses and all of the grades do show. You need to ask the people at CSUSB what their specific policy is.

You should be honest with CSUSB about the earlier transcript - it probably won’t matter to them if your current one is good - but you wouldn’t want them to find out later and rescind your admission.

It isn’t clear from what you’ve posted whether or not you sent the transcripts from BOTH of your CCs when you applied to CSUSB. If you didn’t do that yet, you need to do it now. Whenever you apply for admission to a degree program at an accredited college or university in the US, you are obligated to provide official copies of your transcripts from all institutions that you have attended up to that point in time. This is more about all of the colleges and universities “playing nice with each other” than it is about you as an individual applicant. As for those bad old grades, the key point to remember is that they are OLD grades. Your more recent grades are more important when it comes to admissions.

I’m not sure if I’m reading this right, but it sounds like you’re asking if the CC you currently attend is going to list the grades from the old CC too.

You need to send the transcript from the old CC to Cal State University San Bernardino. It sounds like you’re planning on skipping this step. Bad idea! Every college requires you to list all previous colleges attended.

I understand why you’d like to forget about the first CC, but you’re not allowed to. And its not really a matter of choice. There is a national tracking service set up to allow schools to determine what colleges you have attended. All the Cal CC’s are in the system. When San Bernardino checks they will rescind you. You’re going to turn what’s not really such a bad situation (given your subsequent better performance) into a terrible one.

Oh, I was going to send my transcript from my previous school but I wanted to know whether my current school would just pull the grades that I could use toward my requirements and include them with the work I’ve done there. Does that make sense? Sorry if I confused you.

I’m going to look into Academic Renewal and hope that it helps… =/

If you’re sending both transcripts, no problem. The CSU staff get paid to put together your credits and evaluate them They’ll figure out what applies and what credits you have earned.
