Transcript gpa vs Recalculated gpa

Hello,

Ik that all high schools calculate their gpas differently (or so I’ve heard), but the other day I calculated my gpa with the gpa calculator online (http://gpacalculator.net/high-school-gpa-calculator/) and found out that my gpa was higher than the one that appears in my transcript. I then manually calculated the gpa by adding all the grades from each semester and calculating the average with A being 4.00, B 3.00, etc… (I did this because my high school grades are A B C D and F, no + or -)

So my question here is, do colleges look a the gpa that appears in a student’s transcript only or will they recalculate the student’s gpa?? (that being the way I did or in a different way)

Edit: I’m talking about UW gpa on a 4.0 scale

Some high schools don’t consider electives to count in GPA…see if that’s the case for yours.

I know that some universities do recalculate GPA. Some use specific “variations” from normal calculation such as ignoring freshman year. I am not sure whether all recalculate GPA but I don’t see how they could avoid this since the methods for calculating GPA vary so dramatically between high schools.

Many colleges do recalculate GPAs but they can do it many different ways (ex. weighted/unweighted, academic subjects only etc.) and there is no consistency between schools.

This is something you can ask your guidance counselor about in the fall. You can also check your high school profile to see if it describes how the GPA calculation is made.
