Transcript of a Gmail chat I had with an avid Facebook user

“Facebook is like life: pointless”

me: Why do you love Facebook so much? Is it because you’re young, foolish and impressionable?

Facebook Lover: Um. It’s an amusing and pointless waste of time. It doesn’t work the same way email does, because other people are seeing and responding to our messages to each other...it’s more like a messageboard.

me: So most of your friends know each other?

FL: Most of my friends on Facebook know at least some of my other friends on Facebook.

me: While posting, do you ever slap yourself on the forehead and think “Look what I’m doing! I am SO jobless!!!”

FL: Of course. That’s why it’s fun...we’re all completely aware of how pointless it all is. It’s a bit like life in general.

me: You realise that while you’re pretending to be so clever and “deliberately pointless”, you’re really just as addicted to the evil thing as anyone else is?

FL: Um. No, not really.

me: Well, it’s time you did.

FL: No, I refuse! How dare you try to make me self aware?
It could be worse! I could be religious!

me: What do you have against religious people? Have you ever started a group called “I Hate Religion”?

FL: No...should I?
Facebook is just like...reading a Mills and Boon novel after a day of studying :P

me: I’ll use that quote. “This precocious teenager likens Facebook to reading an M&B after college. However, she still refuses to admit that she’s an addict, preferring to hide behind a veneer of delusional pretentious intellectualism.”

FL: I may never speak to you again!

me: Sure, why speak when you have FACEBOOK?

Um. I take it you are the type of person who is constantly in their room studying and doesn't much hang out with friends?

Um, does anyone else immediately think of "college confidential addiction" parallels when reading this?

Me, so much. CC is my myspace.

Because we all know that you aren't a good person unless you "hang out" with "friends".

Locking yourself in a room isn't a great idea. Not one bit, you need to get out and spend time with friends.

I need to start taking my own advice more often.
