transcript question/chances

so last year I got an F in a bio class and retook it again this year and got a B. The F shows up in my unofficial transcript. Will the F show up if I request for an official transcript?

While I'm at it, what are the chances of me getting into these schools with my stats?

Schools I'm applying for for Fall 2011: UCSD (#1 choice), UCB, UCSB, UCD
Major: Math/Applied Sciences/Applied Mathematics
GPA: 3.20 (only including the UC transferable courses)
Extra: math tutor for 3+ years, a score of 5 on the AP Calculus exam (AB)

Hi, yes your F will show on the official transcript. UCSD and UCB requires a minimum of 3.20 gpa in order to be eligible for those schools. a math major applying to UCB with a 3.20 is pretty low chance. This year the average transfer gpa at UCB was 3.75-3.80.

thank you for the reply.

I plan on using TAG to get into the other UC schools. Will the F be a factor in getting accepted for TAG even though I retook the class and got a better grade? Are there people you know (or people on this board) that have gotten into a UC with an F on there transcript (even though they retook the class for a better grade)?

Hi,

UCB and UCSB does not have TAG. The only schools that I believe that has TAG is UCI and UCSD. The F will be a factor in getting into the schools but the admission officer will also look at the grade you got for that class you have retaken. However, let alone the F will not diminish your chance of getting into a UC. I have seen many students that have F in their transcripts and they still get into one of the UCs. Also, TAG allows admissions to their schools, however it will not guarantee the major you applied, but usually your first choice is usually the major you will be studying if you are trying to acquire TAG.

UCSB has tag.

oops yeah ucsb has tag, but not ucb. sorry

If you retook the course, the F probably won’t matter a great deal from what I’m told. Especially because you retook it. I had to retake Stats (twice!) because both times I took it (Fall 08 and Fall 09) I’ve had really devistating personal circumstances come up that crippled me emotionally (plus the first time around it was an online course and my dv9208nr had to go and have a manufacturer’s defect on me that forced me onto a 5 year old desktop running slower than a snail so doing any meaningful Minitab work was impossible). But anyway, I’m told if I retake it it’ll be fine – Just mention the circumstances of your F in your personal statement. They’ll look at it but if you retake it won’t “count” so much, does that make sense?

You also have to enter in the F on your UC application.

@Itachirumon- I’m in the same 3rd-times-a-charm-stats-class boat facepalm

@Cantabilen

Yup, the F will “count” but not “count-count” lol. I know though it’s horrible, it sucks! I want my A in there now, I understand the materials, it’s just the matter of the homework, that’s pretty much what destroyed me, Bs on tests and not enough assignments turned in, otherwise I was golden. I wanna check if I can switch to an Honors version though since I’m gonna be taking the Honors classes to qualify for the UCLA TAP agreement (and already blew it retaking Psych 002/Exp Psych w/o honors and getting an A in it lmao)

mandatory attendance-4 hours a week-10 am-raining half the time-a mile away-just to spend class time drawing histograms with people who didn’t understand basic arithmetic killed me.

Ahh, you were in a class with less-than-average people? Yeah, I can see how that’d kill. At least everyone in my class was nerdy enough to know what they were doing, like me most just needed it to fulfil their transfer reqs.
