Transcripts, sat scores, and etc.

I'm confused about when applying to colleges, do you make sure you mail your transcripts and score reports the same time you finish the application for a school or can you wait a bit after the application deadline?

Your transcripts are usually mailed by your school registrar or guidance counselor. You can send out applications ahead of the school’s schedule, but be aware that they’re not likely to be read until the school has all the materials it needs, including standardized test scores.

So if the deadline is Nov. 1, does that mean the school has to get the transcripts and recs there by Nov. 1? I’ve been wondering this too.

The college needs your application by its posted deadline. Not all application materials are required, because high school teachers and registrars are often overwhelmed by requests, but they should be in the pipeline.

@Dahsksuebxmap - Please be advised that for some schools the deadline is the deadline for ALL application related material – test scores, transcripts, LORs. Check the websites and if necessary call the school to be sure. The past 2 years I have seen applicants lose out because they thought they could let some things go until after the stated deadline. Good Luck.

@SoofDad‌ does that mean that if the HS didn’t have their act together in meeting the college’s deadline the student was the one suffering? In all my readings the student is responsible for materials under his/her control and the other things are allowed to dribble in.

There are some schools that have absolute deadlines, but they are reasonable with that. For instance, 2 of the schools I applied to one of my letters of recs never made it, so I had them resent (I was able to find this out in a timely matter). At U of R, somehow my transcript never made it originally, so I actually had my GC fax it in (I was worried because they had already starting reviewing apps and determining richmond scholar semi-finalists, but they assured me it was ok). If something got lost in the mail, they won’t hold that against you usually.

@Erin’s Dad - Some schools may give an applicant a break if there are extenuating circumstances, but students should not assume that they can miss deadlines with impunity,… I believe this is especially true of EA schools. Every school is different and it ia always best to check with the school before making any assumptions about deadlines.
