Does anyone know what format most competitive colleges require for sending in high school transcripts?

The info I'm looking for is whether individual quarter grades are typically on the transcripts or is it just end of year grades.

I could ask our high school guidance office but they prefer to communicate through the students which makes in unwieldy.

The colleges see whatever the high school sends; there is no specific "format". Many send semester grades. My d's school sends only final grades, and has great results with admissions to the most competitive schools. And others do send quarter grades.

It's up to your school, so unfortunately there is no way around the guidance office.

Our high school sends only the final grades. I can't imagine why high schools would see the need to send quarter grades. Senior year, mid year grades are provided to the colleges as needed/requested.

Ours are semester grades, since those are "final" for some classes. Fortunately this is one thing you don't have to worry about. They do it the same way for everyone, which will be fine. Colleges are used to seeing all types.
If you are worried about a bad quarter showing up vs. being rolled into a great rest of the year - don't. If the end grade is OK, that C+ one quarter in Geometry isn't going to be a deal breaker.
It is probably worthwhile to order an "official" copy sometime in the spring of junior year when any problems can be worked out before the application crunch.... like if Senora Disorganizedia never corrected the Spanish I grade she inked onto the report card vs. the one in the computer.
