Hey Guys! I am currently taking classes at TMCC in Reno, NV. My goal is to take on Urban Studies as my major, but there isn't a 4-year school in Nevada where they offer such a major so I am resorting to transferring to either UC Berkeley or SFSU, mainly because I am originally from the Bay Area and I would love to go back to study there. I just finished my first year of college at TMCC but there is not much there for Urban Studies majors and I am getting bored really fast with all the general ed classes. I also do not know where to start with the transfer process...

I have considered two possible pathways.
1) Complete 60+ credits at TMCC and apply to Berkeley and SFSU.
2) Wait to take classes at TMCC until summer '10 and then transfer to a cc in California (DVC preferably but any will suffice) and take classes there for a year so that I establish residence status meanwhile completing the 60 required credits to transfer.

Any advice on what I should do? Any advice would be helpful, UNR students, college students in Nevada who want to major in Urban Studies, Cal students...I could go on and on.

Just need some direction because I feel a little lost wanting to pursue a major that is not offered here in my own state. Thank You!

I’m going to leave your thread on this forum since you are asking about SFSU as well as UCB. However, you should also post on the subforum for UC transfers.

I think the lack of CA residency is going to be a problem. Being accepted as an OOS transfer is going to be very difficult for option 1; and the problem with option 2 is that you cannot establish residency while attending college (along with all of the other very strict criteria for becoming a CA resident):

[Legal Residence Information - Office Of The Registrar](http://registrar.berkeley.edu/Default.aspx?PageID=legalinfo.html)

"Physical presence within the state solely for educational purposes does not constitute the establishment of California residence under state law, regardless of the length of your stay.

Yes I will post this over there as well.

I should mention that TMCC is a 2-year community college and not a 4-year. The reason why I wanted to point that out is because I’ve read that its harder to transfer into a UC if you are coming from another 4 year institution because of the priority that California community college students get. Just wondering if UC prioritizes community college transfers over 4 year including those coming oos…

I should add to my #2 option that I plan to move to California and roommate with someone close to campus or live with my Dad there in the Bay Area so that way I can establish residence status.

UCs give priority to CA CC students, I don’t know if they will give OOS CC students any more priority than they do OOS from 4-yr institutions, you’d have to ask someone with the UC system to know for sure.

The fact that you are going to school prevents you from using that time towards residency. You have to quit school AND prove that you are independent, including:

“Unmarried undergraduates from other states qualify as financially independent if they were not claimed by their parents or others as dependents for tax purposes for two preceding tax years and if their annual income is sufficient to meet their needs.”
(from the 1st link)

Since your dad is a resident of CA, you might be able to get residency through him immediately, except that you’ve been a NV resident also. I don’t know what they do in that situation.

Sorry, I can’t help much, but these are definitely issues you want to resolve as soon as possible.
