Transfer Acceptance Rate

"In recent years between 800 and 900 students have applied, and 25 to 35, sometimes fewer, have been offered admission in any year."

That computes to somewhere between 2.77% and 4.37% - Is this a bluff to discourage transfer apps or is it legit? It seems ridiculously low - isn't the freshman admission rate somewhere around 10%.

I don't think its that buffed up. Seems about right to me.

Though I take solace in the fact that a lot of people don't put a lot of effort into these applications. 'I got good grades this year so i'll try to apply to an ivy'. Why not?

The reason WHY is extreeeeeeeeemely important and difficult to show at this point. You have to truly demonstrate that you want to be at the school and would be an asset. The bar is higher than for freshmen in a lot of departments.

by the same token, almost everybody that is applying must have between a 3.8 and a 4.0... this is extremely discouraging

Just hang in there. Write the best essay you can. And keep two things in mind that I have found to have helped those ''bad'' feelings:

Every year you hear stories about students with less than spectacular stats getting into HYP. Those aren't just urban legends. Those are average kids, with average grades who are now sitting there.

CC can be your best tool or your worst enemy. All those 'chance me even though I'm so sure I'm already in' threads are just for validation. and represent the creme of the crope. Certainly not the median by which to compare yourself. (And all of those ECs you see posted don't mean jack for transfers)

Just to confirm....did any of the files related to your transfer application have a space for your ECs???

Nope, i havent sent it in yet though - should i include a resume/CV or is that unnecessary - im assuming they arent very important even though I have involved myself in ECs a good deal here so I dont know what to do.

Well since I did participate in a lot of college competitions (and won them) I had the dean responsible fill one of my faculty reports. He's both a professor and my ex-coach so he mentionned them in it.

I also sent my resume....nothing in particular on it. Just to send my resume. Show I have real world experience, I don't know.

AFalcon10, the admissions rate you quoted is right. I believe last year there were about 700+ applicants and 40 were admitted. Yale is very upfront about saying they accept a "few" transfers.

That's correct. They usually have the lowest transfer acceptance rate of any university in the US that accepts transfers. In recent years Yale has also had the lowest acceptance rate for freshmen of any top university.

24, not 40 :/
But, on the positive side, since our SAT/ACT scores don't show up in the statistics, that's one thing less to stress out about as an applicant. Focus on the essay, rather.

Good luck!

What's not to believe? The no. of spots that open up are very very few -- combined with tons of desirous applicants = tiny admit rate

wait. wait. wait. Frrrph...could you explain that post? SAT-ACT scores don't appear? So they're not relevant?

Because if they're not I will take a plane over to your house and kiss you right on the lips!

BTW: HOW important are SAT scores to a junior transfer (currently sophomore). I'm international too. I think my file and stats are good to very good but then I got my sat scores this morning and er....well I'm still in my PJs if that tells you anything. Bad. Very, very bad.

Now I know for a freshman thats about the end of the road but i've heard that it has less relevance for transfers. :(

why is the yale transfer application so sparse?

Not many freshman drop out.

According to their site btn 25-40 slots open up for incoming Soph and Juniors. That's roughly 2500 students in those two classes with about a 1-2% new slots opening up.

Leave of absences, withdrawals for other reasons, etc.
