Transfer Admission Chances to UVA!!!

I'm a first time college student at northern virginia community college. I'm in my 2nd semester. I reallllyy wanna go to UVA (School of Nursing as my first choice but would like to be admitted to college of arts & sciences if not admitted to SON) but have been STRESSING out the past few weeks during my application process, whether all this effort i'm putting in my application and essays will even be worth it! So here are my stats, let me know what you think my chances are (though I personally believe i have a veryy SMALLL chance of getting in after 1 yr in community college)

I'm a male, I'm of hispanic minority, born in el salvador (have dual citizenship as well, U.S. and El Salvador). I live in northern virginia. i'm also first generation college student.

High School courses from 12th grade were
-ENGLISH 11 (Passed advance on my SOL, and had all A's and B's)
-ENGLISH 12 (had all A's and B's)
-US GOVT (A's and B's)
-CHEMISTRY (C's)
-GEOSYSTEMS(C's and B's)
-ALGEBRA 2 (C's B's and maybe 1 D+)
-AP Spanish (scored a 4 on AP exam)

SAT-- 1150....not too great, but i did take it on a bad day :(

ECC's - Latino Leadership Coalition, SADD, FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America), Did 32 hours of community service at habitat for humanity, also worked in my 11th grade yr.

In high school i started out doing very bad, but as i started getting older and getting into higher classes, i started turning around A LOT!!, at the end of my senior yr i had mostly A's B's and C's, and maybe 1 D+ and ended up with a 2.749 GPA, i did get a 4 on my AP exam

In college is where i turned around much much MORE

FALL 2008
-HIS 121 (A)
-SPEECH 110 (A)
-SOCIOLOGY 201 (B)
-SDV 100 (A)
-ENG 4 (A) --NO CREDIT

ALL A'S AND B'S!!! :)

MY CURRENT COURSE WORK FOR SPRING 2009 is

-ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY 161
-PSYCH 201
-ENG 5 (NO CREDIT)

WORK: I work at a hospital as well, full time while in school. Would this look good for the school of nursing too??

In college i did sooo much better, i ended up with strong a 3.4 GPA for the semester, i turned my grades around a lot!

WHAT DO YOU THINK MY CHANCES ARE OF GETTING ADMITTED TO UVA AFTER JUST 1 YR OF COURSE WORK??

I think my essays were excellent, and told them how much i urged to be at UVA in my personal essay, i'm currently working on my other supplemental essay. Also i'm an excellent essay writer and i heard UVA looks at the essays A LOT.

I'd really like to go to UVA, and an upward trend in my grades looks good on me doesn it? isn't this a positive sign??? I think it shows that i have lots of potential, especially for nursing, although i would like to get admitted to college of arts & sciences as my 2nd choice if not admitted to SON.
WITH STRONG ESSAYS AND ALL OF THIS, WHAT DO YOU THINK, GENERALLY SPEAKING...MY CHANCES ARE OF GETTING ADMITTED TO UVA FOR FALL 2009?!?!?!?!?!?!

besides all the caps lock...

your courseload seems to be pretty light especially with only 4 classes and one of them no credit. How many credits did you take fall and spring semester?

All together last fall 08 semester I had 9 credits that count. I read on the UVA website that 9 credits is their minimum credits required to transfer. Now I have 7 credits for this semester. Also I read on college board that the minimum gpa for transfers is 2.0, I find this hard to believe!! I have a 3.4

Isn't it true that if you have a 3.4 or a 3.5 with nothing lower than a C, you're guaranteed admission to UVA from NOVA?

Yes that's true but that's only if your going in under the guaranteed admission agreement, I'm trying to go after just 1 yr of college work, not 2. I'm scared!

You should apply regardless and then look into the guaranteed admission agreement if that doesn't work out. It doesn't hurt to try twice.

not that great.. itll be easier after 2 years, guaranteed or not

Yeah, it'll probably be easier after 2 yrs (I'm sure i'll get in next yr if not this yr). But so many people told me to give it a shot this year and i thought, what the heck. I submitted everything yesterday, and my essay was superb (i heard UVA takes the essays very seriously) is that true????
But thanks anyways!

If you do end up having to go through GAA, make sure that you look more into it. You have to complete ALL the gened requirements to be considered as going in under the GAA among a few other stipulations. I don’t know if you knew that already, but just wanted to help out a fellow transfer, if not.

Good luck! Less than two days till we know!

I don’t think you have a very good chance at all actually. Being a Hispanic male unfortunately will not help you at all. Since your high school grades seem pretty weak, you should try to take more courses (may be over the summer) and literally get straight As. You have too few credits to have already “proven” yourself. To be admitted to the College is pretty hard, but to be admitted to the SON is extremely hard as a transfer. Good luck!

I would be surprised if you’re admitted - though it always depends on the overall melt and the VCC kids tend to have preference over many others.

And if you’re applying to the nursing school, I’d be shocked if you made it.

Just my professional opinion.

I’m just glad I actually spoke with Dr. Carroll, and she got my full name!! Shes actually the head of the tranfer committe for the school of nursing.
This admissions counselor told me, “Whatever you do, you want to have your NAME under Dr. Carrolls tounge. She is one of the few people who gets a say in as to who gets in and who does not for the Nursing School.” An admissions counselor told me this while I was visiting UVA.

despite your nationality and your being a first-gen, that really only helps if you have competitive grades; a 2.7 high school gpa and a 3.4 with only 9 credits are both really hurting you. even if you got straight A’s, 9 credits in the fall followed by 7 credits in the spring doesn’t look good at all.

if you don’t get in, i think you’ll have a much better chance if you take a heavier courseload next year, keep getting A’s, complete your associate’s degree, and try to fulfill as many (or all) of the requirements from the guaranteed admission agreement. i feel like school is generally more important to uva than work experience, so i’d focus much more on your schoolwork, even if it means cutting back at your job.

Yeah, I mean I knew this was a stretch for me. I wasn’t EVEN going to apply but my family and friends convinced me to.
If I don’t get in this yr (GOD FORBID) that’s okay, next yr I’m certain I can get in.

Well…I wouldn’t want you to be certain when transfer admissions to the University is quite competitive. Don’t think that you’re competing with students from other community colleges, you will be competing against kids who go to UVA’s peer schools. I transferred myself from the College of William & Mary, in my transfer orientation group there was a girl from Columbia, a guy from Harvard, quite a few (10+ from William & Mary) and a few from Georgetown. For the most part, we had all gotten into UVA as seniors, however, chose not to go for a variety of reasons. The two people I met from NOVA had 4.0s. You’re going to have to work extremely hard, but make sure you don’t just apply to UVA as admission is really not guaranteed for anyone. You should consider GMU, JMU and Tech as well to keep your options open.

Wahoomb,
I will be applying to those schools next year, if I don’t get in this year.
JMU, W&M, VT, Duke, UNC, and UMW.

Do any of you guys know if its true what an admissions counselor told me: VCCS AND IN-STATE STUDENTS ARE GIVEN PRIORITY.
I heard it From an admissions counselor so I’m sure it’s true, just wondering if any of you have ever heard this before as well?

IS are given priority in the sense that UVA is still trying to maintain the 2/3 IS ratio. VCCS students with auto-admit are given priority too. But beyond that, I don’t think that statement is totally true.

it would also be prudent of you to think of the price of uva vs the price of continuing community college. if you’re only doing part time work (UVA only lets you have 8 semesters to complete your work including the ones from before you transferred, regardless of how many credits you take per semester here - proly not true for your cc semesters) it might be better to finish all the gen ed requirements, save up as much money as possible, and then come to uva. especially in this economy. my ex went to nova cc (hispanic male as well) and constantly was upset about how much money things cost here (from apartments to car stuff to tuition - summer tuition especially hit him hard). just something to keep in mind.

GUYS, I GOT WAITLISTED!!!
Haha, I’m thankful for this…i was soo sure i was gonna get rejected (My stats are wayyy up there)
Now just gonna keep positive, keep on praying, work really hard and study hard to finish off my semester with at least B’s and maybe get off the waitlist :)

PS. They said they thought i had impressive credentials
Gonna try to set up an appointment with the Dr. Carroll from the SON to let her know how much i wanna go to UVA and why :)

GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE ELSE!!!

UVaFan… i don’t mean to sound like an a-hole, but you should not expect to get off the waitlist. I’m almost certain most student that apply as transfers from NOVA, and don’t get accepted (that at least have decent grades) get waitlisted. I don’t know why, but that seems the case. There are people on the waitlist with better grades, more credit hours, and harder courses. I have been put on the waitlist to UVa three times (including this time).

I am middle eastern (not sure if that hurt my chances, lol)

3.8 gpa high school with advanced diploma (with 6 ap courses)
over 150 service hours at World Bank

Nova- 3.92 gpa over 3 semesters (46 credits including the ones I’m taking now)
Main classes- Bio (3 courses), Chem (111 & 112), Physics, English, Writing, Calculus, Psych, Socio, History, Spanish

Also, my essays were just like you said yours were (Very Good). I had help from numerous teachers in writing them. (plus my aunt is an English major)

All this, and i don’t like my chances of actually getting of the waitlist. I mean if i didn’t get accepted the first two times, why now??
You know whats funny? I got accepted to George Washington University… Not sure i want to go there though, i really don’t like D.C + my brother is at UVa.

I guess ill just wait for and apply with guaranteed admission after this semester. (But who knows, maybe i will get accepted from the wait list this time)

But still, that doesn’t mean there is absolutely no chance for u to make it. Maybe you have something that makes the school want you. I’m not saying give up, I’m saying don’t stress over it, and I’m saying that from experience (i almost went into depression the first two times i was rejected from the waitlist :P)

So with all that, Good Luck!
