Transfer Admission for CoE Chance Thread (yet another one!)

Alright guys, I've been an avid reader of these forums lately and have seen several transfer admission threads. I have been working towards completing my last prerequisite course (differential equations) and finally completed it so now I have too much free time on my hands, haha! Well given all this free time I've been putting together my application and getting everything ready to send out in August.

Simply put, I'm just wondering what my CC peers think about my chances given that admissions will be even harder next year... especially on OOS transfers.

Academic Record:

Cumulative GPA of 3.85 (461.8 quality points / 120 credit hours)

Completion of all pre-req courses for Mechanical Engineering

3.93 GPA for all science/math related courses

Completed associate of art degree prior to switching major in my bachelor's degree (which explains the massive accumulation in credit hours)

Member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society

Maintained Dean's list standing each semester of school

High School GPA was around 3.6ish I think... I'm waiting on my transcripts to come in

Never took the ACT or SAT in High School

Extra-curricular Activities:

Served three years in U.S. Army (will complete total of four years by the time I separate)

Logged more than 300 hours of volunteer time with Family Readiness Group activities (essentially supported military families of deployed service members)

I did not have much of a chance to do academically related extra-curricular activities since I usually worked 20-30 hours a week since the start of college.

Additional Remarks:

Letter of recommendation from professor (and assistant dean) of the Mechanical Engineering department of the school I attended when I switched to Mech Eng.

Letter of recommendation from my commanding officer which focuses on my leadership roles and responsibilities along with his recommendation for admission consideration.

Not sure if this will be taken into consideration, but even though I'm an OOS transfer applicant, the GI Bill will offer 100% tuition payment to U-M. Given that the economy has probably softened the amount of students eligible to pay full tuition, perhaps U-M might take into consider that they won't need to focus on any Fin-Aid offers for me?

I would be very upset if I don't get accepted to Michigan, but I'm a realist and even though I've got a lot of good things going for me and feel Michigan is the best fit for my intentions, I need back-ups. I've also considered Illinois, Berkeley, Carnegie Melon and Cornell (although CMU and Cornell will only be partially covered since they're private so I would need financial aid).

Anyway, I realize these are annoying, but my curiosity is turning into anxiety so I'm just hoping for several outside opinions.

Thanks so much guys!

First of all I’d like to thank you for serving in the military. As far as school goes, I would feel pretty darn good about a 3.85 man. I was accepted to the college of engineering in March for ME this year transferring from Michigan State, and was accepted with a 3.60 on the dot. Combine your GPA with your extra-curricular stuff, and I would say you have a really solid shot. Just write a few good essays, and I would say you’re almost a shoe in. Waiting sucks, but hang in there, I think Michigan’s worth it :)

Thanks for the response. I’m pretty comfortable with the GPA given the number of hours it reflects. The only downside about so many credits is that they are accumulated through 5 different schools. One school I took an Econ class to satisfy a pre-req and another has 60 credits. I hope they take into account that I was never at one place very often and consider it to be a strength rather than a dilution of knowledge. I would love to discuss how much determination I had for U-M that I specifically went out of my way to choose institutions that they recognize as transfer equivalencies… to me that sounds so tacky though, but it’s true lol! Anyways thanks and more responses are always welcomed!

i see no problems with your transfer.
