My son was admitted to MIT as a freshman for Fall "09. This was his dream school and he was thrilled. He ended up deciding on another school due to a merit scholarship he received. Within a week he realized that he made a huge mistake and is not in the kind of intellectual environment he would experience at MIT. He wants to apply to transfer for sophomore year. Does the fact that he was admitted help him at all? Do you have any suggestions that would aid in this process? Also, is it ever possible to transfer after one semester of college if he has enough AP credits? Thank you!

What other school did he choose?

I addressed my question to the wrong name prevously…sorry. Son was admitted to MIT for Fall '09. He chose another school due to merit money and has regretted his choice since school began. MIT was his dream school and he wants to transfer. Do you have any suggestions? Does it make it any easier since he was accepted? He is beating himself up for his mistake!

I don’t know that being admitted previously helps specifically, but it certainly helps to be the kind of student MIT will admit already. Still, the transfer process is extremely competitive, as not many students leave each year and open spots for transfers. As far as I am aware, it is only possible to transfer after completing a full year of college elsewhere.

The transfer admissions process is different from the freshman admissions process (transfers are read by senior admissions staff only, and at a different selection time from freshmen), but the basic points of the application are similar. It’s definitely worth checking out the [transfer admissions page](http://web.mit.edu/admissions/transfer/) to see what classes a prospective transfer should be taking right now. But I don’t have any personal experience with transfers – I didn’t know any at MIT, and I don’t think we’ve ever had one post on CC. They’re very rare.

Also, there’s no need to address a thread specifically to me – I actually do read every thread on the forum. :)
