Transfer Admissions 101

@hopefuleagle

I went abroad last summer and I was just asking my advisor how to address it in my grad school apps. The course of study is only tangentially related to my major. She suggested speaking about it as an exercise in broadening horizons; academically, mentally, culturally. It sounds pretty reasonable and I might go that route. Just thought I’d put in her two cents.

In reading the residency requirements for several states, including CA, I would never tell a student that they will attain residency while attending college in a new state. I’m not saying that it never happens, but most states I’ve seen specifically guard against this, otherwise there would be very few OOS students after the first year.

Question moved to another part of forum

I was wondering if anyone can help me,
I graduated high school 4 years a go and will be applying to various schools as a transfer student. During high school I was lazy and my GPA was a 2.8, now in college I have a 3.6 and will be getting my AA in May.

How much will they focus on my high school stats and will I HAVE to send in my high school transcripts to the schools?

As a jr transfer, colleges will put more weight on your college record than what you did in HS. It really varies by school, some don’t ask for HS transcripts from jr transfers, others still want HS transcripts and will put some weight on them. For transcript requirements, check the websites for individual schools.

I am in my 4th semester at CUNY Queensborough CC with a 3.3 GPA. I plan to graduate with an associate’s in Business Administration. I plan to transfer to CUNY Baruch or Queens College. I read a transfer overview on the Queensborough CC site that only one CUNY will accept you from all your choices. Once accepted, the others will not review your application. I’ve already received my acceptance to Queens College about a week ago by mail. Does that mean I’m not getting into Baruch?

^whiteyoshi, start a thread on the main part of this forum to ask your question as more people will see it there.

I intend to transfer in two years would it serve any purpose to take the sat?
I havent done so yet and I am a senior in HS

thanks
-Eric

It depends on the college you plan to transfer to, some require SATs for jr transfers, others don’t.

I am sorry to ask you again. I’ve already read all your posts therefore i apologize for asking you this question again. Could you tell me, roughly, in percentage-wise, the importance of college gpa to high school gpa? I already know that they look at it and people tell me i can’t do anything about it but i need assurance. With a 4.0 gpa in college and a low gpa of around a 3.0 or possibly a little lower in high school, what are the chances of making top 20 universities?

It really depends. I’ve read that some top-tiers don’t even look at it, and then some do. You can’t seriously blanket one admissions concept to every top university, they’re all different and do stuff differently on the inside.

Your college GPA will always be more important than high school, though. If it’s not, that’d be a problem.

I can’t tell you anything beyond the generalities that if you are a soph transfer it will be weighted heavily and less so as a jr transfer. Schools have different policies about how they select transfer students; and gpa, while important, is just one part of your application.

The best thing you can do is to construct a balanced list with reaches in the top 20 schools, but also match and safety schools. And don’t forget to consider both admissions and finances, there’s no reason to get accepted to a school if you can’t afford to attend.

Hey guyz have u heard back from the schools u applied?
I sent my apps like two weeks ago and i still didnt get any notification that says we received ur app .
I sent it online and have u guyz received anything like notifications?
I received email from common app after sending the app that says submission succesfful but nothing else from the college.

Maxdream: Call the admissions ask. I called UNC and asked if they received my stuff because it wasn’t showing up and they said they had it all in hand.

Hello, I am really confused on the whole concept of transferring to be honest…

I am trying to transfer into Cal Poly SLO from a community college as a Physics major . Their transfer criteria consists of all these classes that support the Physics major such as english comp, critical thinking, speech, (the usual) AND THEN it says I need physics, math, chem…and GE requirements of course. The criteria can be found here [Transfer Selection Criteria -Admissions- Cal Poly](http://admissions.calpoly.edu/_admiss/undergrad/transfer-models/physa.html)

But when I go to other colleges’ sites like San Fransisco State’s, they say all you need is 30 sem units of GE including:

 1. One course in oral communication
 2. One course in written composition
 3. One course in critical thinking
 4. One course in mathematics or quantitative reasoning, with intermediate algebra as a prerequisite

Am I understanding this right? Some colleges only need GE requirements plus the 4 basic skills courses, but others (like CalPolySLO) require additional courses that support the major?

^I’m not familiar with CP-SLO’s requirements, you might want to start a new thread on the main Transfer Students forum as it gets more traffic.

So, just to clarify - I read the last part of the 2nd post on this thread on applying as a transfer vs. freshman (again) for colleges. If your school is on the quarter system and you accumulate 36 credits after fall and winter quarter and then stop attending that college, you would apply as a freshman admission again?

^It all depends on the school. Some schools, will consider you for fr admissions if you haven’t completed a full year of post-HS college. For others, they count a single post-HS college class as having attended college and will require you to apply as a transfer.

I am closing this thread, please refer to the first few pages for general information on the transfer process.

I re-opened this thread temporarily to add some material to the early posts. So if you have not checked the thread recently and need the basic info, you might want to recheck the first half-dozen posts again.

I have also cleaned out the recent spate of very specific personal situation questions that really can’t be answered on a thread like this, as entomom says.

***Now that the thread is closed, you may be tempted to PM your specific questions re personal situation and/or queries re your “chances” to Andale or entomom. Please refrain. We do not “DO” chances. Please post your questions on forum - you are much more likely to get a timely response and benefit from several perspectives, including from people who may have faced your same situation. Thank you. ***
