I have read through a lot of the posts on the Tulane board and this little community seems so helpful! Is there anyone out there that knows anything about transfer admissions?

I have applied as a transfer student for the fall semester and I am a bit nervous. I have a GPA of 3.72 (50 hours), a member of phi theta kappa, and (not sure if this hampers or helps) I am a non-traditional student.

Hi Mags. Excuse my ignorance, but I am not sure what a “non-traditional” student is.

I don’t know a lot about transfers, but I do know that a lot depends on the retention rate for the current class. They won’t know that for a little while. Traditionally Tulane has been able to take a couple of hundred transfers, but again it is space dependent.

Other than that, if you are looking to be in the class of 2013 (in other words sophomore in the fall), I think it will still depend to some degree on your high school record also. My understanding is they still require you to submit most of the same things you would as if you were applying to be a freshman. I could be mistaken on that, certainly.

Non-traditional usually refers to an older student returning to college (e.g a mom with young kids - just as an example) who typically lives off campus and commutes. Where are you currently attending?

I am currently attending a community college in TX. I grew up in New Orleans and recently talked my husband into moving there. Two weeks ago I was getting my application in order for Columbia GS. When he looked at Tulane’s program, he realized that it was more than just going back “home” - it would be a great fit for me.

As to the non-traditional student, I am a 30 year old wife and mother (kids are 12 and 9) that went back to school 2 years ago. I have worked as a flight attendant for the past ten years and for the past year I have also been an intern at my State Representative’s office.

One more question, I applied on-line and feel that I was not able to “sell” myself as well as if I had applied in a traditional manner. I was thinking about sending in reference letters from professors - is something that I should/should not do?

Ah, of course, I should have realized what “non-traditional” meant. Just that in this day and age, seems like it could mean anything! LOL.

I would strongly encourage reference letters. If you are going to be in New Orleans or can make a trip there without too much hardship, I would also encourage an appointment with the admissions counselor assigned to you. If you cannot make it in person, a pre-arranged phone appointment can help also. Be prepared to ask them questions about Tulane, especially as pertains to your non-traditional status, but also about how you can contribute being in a different place in your life than the traditional sophomore. You might also want to ask if you qualify for the Honors Program. Just showing that kind of interest and initiative can help move you to the “top of the pile”.

Go to the TU admissions page. They have a list of the counselors and you can identify your state and it will pull up your counselor. In the NE they goe by zipcode b/c of the large # of applicants

Magic. OK OK. You go to the Tulane admissions page [Tulane Admission](http://admission.tulane.edu/) then click on “meet your counselor” in the upper right green area under “get to know us”. Then you will see in the right side under the picture a link to transfer students.

***Too late!! We are all too efficient. LOL.

First, I think that you all are wonderful! I check this board a couple of times a week just to see what is going on and I thoroughly enjoy reading all of your posts. Jym626 and Fallenchemist should be on Tulane’s payroll!

On Friday my status was updated on Gibson to:
“Your application is complete. The Committee on Admission is working to render your decision as quickly as possible. If you have questions regarding your status, please call the Undergraduate Admission Office at 800-873-WAVE (9283).”

It would seem, to me, that the “rush” for the admission office would be over, now that the May 1 deadline has come and gone. Do you think that the decision process will be a bit quicker than what I have read in previous posts?

I am afraid I know very little about their process for transfers and their timetable. I am sorry. But I will definitely ask Tulane for a raise anyway, lol.

Good luck, mags!
I too, can’t say much about the transfer chances, but yes, now that school is over for the year, things should be quieter on campus. The number of students transferring out has lowered in the past few years, from my understanding, and with the higher retention rate, the chances might have changed a bit, but I still think you will hear, hopefully good news shortly. And you don’t need housing, which is a big plus, as thats a crunch issue on campus right now.

** How much of a raise do you think we can ask for, FC??

Honestly, I had not considered it; however, I just looked at their Web site and it does give me something to think about. Thanks for the suggestion!
