I was denied as a soph transfer to NU for fall 2009. NU was the only school I applied to as a transfer because it was my first choice. But oh well, life goes on.

Unfortunately, I am really unhappy at WashU. I hate St. Louis. I hate the school. I hated the community and atmosphere and went through the worst first year having 2 bad roommates then finally moving into a single. Basically I want out. I am considering going to NYU as a visiting student for fall 2009 then transferring to another university in spring 2010.

Can someone give me advice? I have a 3.2 at WashU right now and I'm looking at NYU, Columbia, Barnard, Northwestern, USC, Dartmouth, and Brown. I would prefer a big city but I really just wanna be near a coast because being in St. Louis makes me very claustrophobic. I am taking orgo at Harvard right now and working as a summer intern at Harvard medical school and have great recs and ecs...any advice would be great! And any suggestions for potential colleges to transfer to would be awesome!

The general consensus on college confidential is that you need a 3.5+ GPA to get into the top schools. A possible disadvantage to going to NYU for a semester is that you will have to adjust to a new school and get fantastic grades the same semester. (As a sophomore transfer for spring semester colleges will see the first year of college work. Some schools ask for your midterm grades, and some schools don’t). Thus, you don’t have a lot of time to raise your GPA. (There are online GPA calculators that can help you figure out what GPA you need to get next term to get a 3.5.)

Here are some things to think about: How badly do you want out of Wash U? Would you consider a state school? a liberal arts college? a lower ranked university with or without an honors program? Have you considered schools in the Boston/ DC areas? on the West Coast? What do you want exactly that Wash U doesn’t have? What schools are strong in your major? Do you need financial aid? Is it more important to get out of Wash U sooner, or have a potentially higher GPA?

Ok, I understand I need to get my grades up and I’m taking a summer course right now which I must do well in and I will def use the GPA calculator to see where it gets me.

I really badly want out of WashU. The entire place is wrong for me. I have considered state schools: UCLA and Berkeley because UCLA was where I wanted to go. Liberal arts colleges I have considered are Wellesley and Barnard. Schools in Boston are more fitting to my stye; I am not a big fan of DC schools but I am looking at NY, Boston, and the NE. On the west coast, I am looking at UCB, UCLA, and USC. What I am looking for that WashU doesn’t have is a city with an artistic environment and more flexibility in taking art/film courses. But my major is gender studies and WashU’s gender studies department isnt spectacular. Liberal arts schools and more artsy/film schools would definitely help me there. I don’t need financial aid but it would be really nice to get some. It would be more important to me to get a higher GPA but I also really would like to get out of WashU asap.

Are you a CA resident? If not, UCLA and Cal as a transfer is going to be very difficult even with a great gpa due to their emphasis on instate transfers and particularly CCC students.

I don’t know if giving you bad news will earn me cookies but I think that the odds are stacked against you for all those schools. As mentioned earlier, your GPA is simply too low and even if you do better in the future, your springs grades may not even be accounted for.

The list of schools you mentioned are schools mentioned a lot on these forums. Have you really researched them to see if they would be a good fit or are you picking them because they seem to be a good fit? Maybe it’s worth looking at other schools that aren’t as well known. CC overly emphasizes a handful of schools. There are many other schools that aren’t talked about that you might like just as much. Just remember, name isn’t everything.

You def need a higher gpa (3.7+) to get into those schools. And how do you know if you will like them or not? WashU is also a great school if nothing works out.
Wheres my cookies!?

If you hate WashU, why don’t you just take a leave of absence from there for a year. Stay in Boston and keep working there while you consider your options. By the time the applications are due in the spring, you may have a completely new list, or you may have decided you’ll be fine back at WashU. Think of this as a much deserved, if slightly delayed, Gap Year.
