I have a very unique situation. I took a placement test my sophmore year of high school and basicly dropped out, with a GED type diploma because I had to go work. After that i enrolled in the CC for two semesters in which I got all drops for not going after the first week. I moved to miami and opened up a business but then sold it to pursue my education.

Currently: after this semester of CC i will have completed 60 units (got my AA) and my GPA is 3.66 (one of my first classes didnt' drop me and gave me an F, i think they'll consider that), i am a member of two honors societies on my campus, and most of my classes were def. academic. I am going to either major in Econ. or Business depending on the school i get into. I really really want to go to USC or UCLA and should meet their requirements, do i have a chance? would they look past the obvious lack of academics in my past? also Chapman University is very close to me but i see that UCR is higher ranked, would it be wise to go to UCR before Chapman?

Hi psuperman112!

do i have a chance? would they look past the obvious lack of academics in my past?

You've certainly got a great story to tell in your personal statements (Try to explain the bad grades in one of them). I've also heard UCs favor upwards trends in academics. In short, apply and you've got a good shot. Also, try to do your schools honors program if you have not done so already.

also Chapman University is very close to me but i see that UCR is higher ranked, would it be wise to go to UCR before Chapman?

Try not to base where you want to go on the US news rankings (The forumla is arguably pretty bad anyways). Do your research and see what school is best for your major, fits more of your preferences and so forth.

thanks for the reply. i dont really have any bad grade besides one 'F' but that semester all my other classes were dropped so it really looks out of place, also i retook the class and got an A.

Any other thoughts on how good of a school i could get into?

Tell me more of your stats, extracurriculars and what not.

well the main stats are that my GPA is 3.66 ( should be above 3.7 after this semester)

EC: i'm a member of Alpha Gamma Sigma (honors society), Phi Theta Kappa (honors society), i recently started volunteering at the YMCA. next semester i'm going to be a tutor at the writing center but i dont think that will count because it's way after the application

as for work i ran a business for a year, and before that worked as a receptionist/book-keeper at a law office

My thoughts:

UCLA: match
UCR: safety

I'm unfamiliar with the admissions of SC and Chapman.

I've some of the same extracurriculars as you, the AGS, PTK and English tutor. May I ask what college you attend?
