I am a freshman at Fordham University (ranked 53rd National University by U.S. News) and want to transfer for next year. I got a 3.5 GPA (in the Global Business honors program) first semester and have SAT score of 1480 (old scale) or 2150 with writing. I earned a 33 on the ACT, and had a 3.98 GPA in high school. I was also a national merit scholar. What are my chances of getting accepted to William and Mary, Williams, Tufts, and, Brown? I was admitted to William and Mary prior to enrolling at Fordham, but turned it down for financial reasons. I have a solid list of involvement in extracurricular programs with an emphasis on music. I already have earned a leadership position in an a cappella group, and performed at Carnegie Hall. What are my chances?

Note: Transferring because I am dissatisfied with the party climate at Fordham, and the massive inflexible core. I also want to move to a more liberal arts focused program for pre-law, rather than the business track I had planned to pursue.

You stand a great chance. College GPA may be a tad low for Brown, but otherwise, you are a competitive applicant. Make sure your essays are great.

Thank you very much! You wouldn’t happen to know anything about transfer aid at these schools or one school similar to those that I should be looking at?

Out at Williams (12 students accepted last year) and probably out at Brown. Better chances for the others. Brown is notorious for giving bad transfer aid, not sure about the others.

Is it worth a shot at Williams and Brown and I just shouldn’t get my hopes up or should I not apply at all? And do you have any ideas for similar places I should look, because if I don’t transfer this year, I plan on sticking it out.

You should apply. It doesn’t hurt to try. If you do not try, you’ll never know if you have been accepted or not.

Other schools to try…
College of William & Mary
Boston College
New York University

Thanks!! I applied to BC and was accepted into the honors program, but their aid was lousy…William and Mary will work, it was actually my dream school if they give me the same aid package as last time…NYU is a bit urban for me, but the academics would be right

Brown is need aware for transfers. If your financial situation hasn’t changed, then I would be surprised if W&M gave yoTu a better financial aid package than it had before. (Financial aid packages tend to be worse for transfers).

I just need the same financial package as last time, And are there any schools in a similar category that would give decent aid/scholarships for transfers
I would prefer a smaller school with a higher ranking not in California that could help me get into a prestigious law school

and by smaller i mean mid to smallish school not u of mich sized

Vanderbilt and UNC-Chapel Hill both give generous financial aid for transfers. And as far as the size of the schools go:

Vanderbilt - <15,000 total (includes both grad and undergrad)
UNC - <30,000 total (grad/undergrad)

I have no idea if they’ll help you get into law school though.
