transfer advice

Hello all, and merry Christmas!

Notre Dame has been my dream school for years, and unfortunately, I was waitlisted, and later denied this past year. I am a Caucasian Catholic female from New York. Here is a brief list of my stats:

School: Public (on Long Island)

HS E.C.'s: 5 letter varsity athlete, NHS, art honor society VP, Spanish honor society, DECA award winner, student body president (senior year), and many more
Awards: many academic awards, perfect attendance in high school, others

I realize that my GPA is way under the average one for ND transfers, but I plan to work even harder in the second semester and get at least a 3.5, if not higher. I have contacted Ms Susan Joyce a few times throughout the semester. Also, I hope that the university I am currently attending (a public one with no grade inflation) will be considered in the process. I should be able to get a good rec from one of my professors. What I basically want to know is what I can do to increase my chances for acceptance. Any advice will be greatly appreciated! Thank you all!

Transferring to Notre Dame

Check out the website, it will give you some good advice. The best things you can do is get in the right classes, which Susan Joyce can help you with, and also get a 4.0 or darn close to it. It can be done, I had a 3.1 my first semester and then a 3.9 my second semester and was accepted to ND but that was four years ago!

Also, be sure to check to make sure that the business program under pre-prof is available to transfers. Transfers can't transfer into the business college which is why I have my doubts. Just ask Ms. Joyce, she can help you with all of that. She is excellent and will help you do everything you can!

Worst come to worst, UNC is an excellent school. If I may ask, why are you thinking of transferring? Selling your reason is important in writing the essay.

Good luck!

Thanks, irish. I will check out that site. Ms Joyce has said that the science-buisness major can be transferred into because it is in the College of Science. I think that my classes follow the ND freshman first year of studies almost exactly, but I am not sure if my B-'s will transfer. Do you know if they could?

I am happy at UNC, and I know that its a great school and all, but I have a feeling that I could be happier at ND. I am looking for more of a Catholic environment (there are not too many Catholics down there), and am definitely looking for a more academically motivated/challenging environment. Although UNC is a top school, because it is so large, there are many students who are not too concerned with their academics. It may seem like this is not important to be because of my current GPA, but I really would like to be surrounded by people who are serious about there school work. Also, because UNC is so big, it is nearly impossible not to get lost in the mix (huge classes, advisers don't know their kids, etc). In my essay, I plan to emphasize the Catholic environment and why I have chosen my major. I am kind of confused about how to go about writing a good transfer essay, though. Any tips? Thanks!

The B-'s should transfer without a problem.

Sounds like a good idea with the essay, you can't go wrong going with Catholicism at ND. As for the essay, I would say look at my essay page on the website. Just try to show how ND fits your needs better than UNC (won't be hard given what you have said) and if possible say what you will bring to the ND community. You will see what I mean when you read that page.

Thanks so much, irish! You are so helpful! Anyone else have any advice?
