Transfer advice?

Hey all. I'm starting my freshman year at a community college this fall and I wanted some advice on transferring to USC. I'm applying for fall 2011 because I want to start trying as early as possible. I'm still a little confused on the requirements though.

I'm applying for transfer admission into Critical Studies (SCA) as my first choice and English (CLAS) as my second (and I guess Undeclared as my third).

These are my AP scores:
Euro - 4
Art Hist - 3
US Hist - 5
English Lang - 4
English Lit - 4
Spanish Lang - 4
US Gov - 4

My CC gives credit out like candy (I got 35 credits for the AP scores at the CC, but USC would only grant me 24 units) so I got out of most of the introductory courses... these are the classes my counselor told me to take for the fall semester: Math 165 (Stats), Astronomy 112, Speech and Communication 101 (I really didn't want to, but if I take that and math I basically have an associate's degree here), and Sociology 101. So those classes add up to 14 credits for me, for a total of 49.

As far as the transfer requirements, I fulfilled the math and diversity ones. The ones I am confused about are english and foreign language. According to USC's AP credit policy, a score of 4 or 5 on an AP language exam satisfies the FL requirement. I got a 4 so that means I satisfied it, right? The problem is that my CC only offers a few Spanish classes, and my score got me out of all of them so I can't really take them. I would have to switch to another language to satisfy the requirement. The same applies to english -- my scores got me out of the introductory composition courses, so do I still have to take two english composition classes?

I'm just really confused about everything and I really hope there are a few successful transfers out there that can help me out. :)

heyy so i’m not exactly sure what to tell you on the foreign language requirement. i know that you don’t need it to transfer (i haven’t taken any language course yet, but i got in), so you MAY want to wait on taking another language. If you get in, you’ll have the opportunity to test out of the requirement, or like you said, your AP score will get you out of it. I’d talk to you usc counselor on that one.

as for the english, i am positive that the AP test doesn’t get you out of the writing req (i took both, 4s on both). So, you’ll have to take two semesters of college writing to transfer. you should talk to your cc counselor on which ones satisfy the requirement, or you can find it here:

when you look up your school.

hope that helps some :)

To follow up on what sclove09 said about AP English, it will give you credit, I believe, but won’t bypass the Writing requirements. It’s elective credit.

[USC ARR : Articulation : Advanced Placement Exams](http://www.usc.edu/dept/ARR/articulation/apexams.html)

I would recommend taking a writing course next semester. Generally, fulfill as many pre-requisites as possible and take courses related to your major. The hope is that a transfer comes in and all the work they’ve done applies.

Okay, I had a feeling that’s what was gonna happen. :stuck_out_tongue: Errg, I wish my CC had more options for English… I’ll email USC about it.

look online to see if your majors require the foreign language to graduate.
