Transfer after 1 year at CC?

Okay my friend didn't do so hot in high school, and he's goin to a CC for the 2008-2009 academic year. The thing is...he thinks he can transfer to UT after 1 year if he gets good grades in what would obviously be core classes. He wants to be an archaeologist (big Indiana Jones fan)...I'm assuming that would be an anthropology major in the Liberal Arts college? What kind of GPA would he need to transfer into UT for the Fall of 2009, and is transfer admission only based on GPA?

Yes, that would be anthro in COLA.

Transfer admission is not entirely based on GPA, but it's the main factor.

3.6-3.7 should be good to qualify for admission to Liberal Arts. 22% of transfer applications are accepted, but I think that's including a lot of kids who apply to things like business or engineering and get rejected because they are ultra-competitive for external transfers.

If he gets a 3.7 it should be a sure thing, 3.5 would have a chance, from what I've heard.

^Transfer acceptance rate is actually 45%.

College Search - University of Texas at Austin - UT - Admission

I was accepted as a transfer into COLA (History) with like a 3.3?, so it is very possible to transfer with less than a 3.5.

From what I can recall off the top of my head, I had the lowest GPA of all of my friends, excluding CAP kids, who were accepted as transfers.

I did really crappy in high school too (I was in the lower half of my graduating class), but that doesn't matter because UT doesn't look at your high school grades...i worked my ass off and ended up making a 3.88 and just got accepted to the Liberal Arts school coming out of UTSA, so just forget about high school, start new and do the best you can and you will definitely have a good chance of getting in if you really work for it!

no my friend didn't even get CAPped. He's going to Collin college (a community college in plano,tx), and he thinks that he'll get into UT for Fall 2009 for sure and maybe even the u of chicago because that's where "Indiana Jones went". (What he told me while we were watching the latest movie). So I know UT reserves all the spots for kids that got CAPped, so would that hurt him in the admissions process? I just dont want him to not have a realistic grip on his options and have his goals be defeated.

No, those are already assigned separately.
But EVERYONE who applies to UT from Texas and doesn't get in is CAPped, so your friend should have thought ahead and applied for that.

But yes if he realistically goes to Quad C and tries hard and gets in the upper 3's or a 4.0, he will get in to UT.

UChicago is much more of a stretch. They look for intellectualism and quirkiness in their app, along with grades as well. You just have to be the right kind of person there. UT is not personal at all--it's all numbers based.
