I'm thinking of transferring after 1 year of community college to maybe
u of virginia, rice or emory. My main problem is that I had horrible hs grades. 2.7 gpa w/ 1600 sat. with bunch of D's and F's. Is hs grades really a huge factor in admission when transferring after 1 year?

If I get at least a 3.5+ gpa in college, will I have a chance or should I think of transferring after two years?

THanks!

i think you will have a better chance after 2 years. because with only one years of college, some admission offices make their decision half based on college and half based on high school record. but you should make sure that the colleges you are looking to apply to, even in 2 years, do not really consider your high school record, because some of the more selective schools will even though you are a junior level transfer.

abc,
Read the Transfer Admissions 101 sticky thread at the top of this forum. For sop transfers, your test scores and HS record are very important. When you apply, you will have only completed only one sem/qt of college work, so AOs will have very little of your college to assess and will rely heavily on what you did in HS.

A two year plan would be much more reasonable. But along with that you should try for at least a 3.5 college gpa and make a list that also includes less selective schools than the ones you’ve listed.
