Transfer after a dismissal

In 2015 I withdrew from a well known university for academic and personal reasons. I returned one year later and made a stupid mistake (I never harmed anyone nor did I destroy anyones property) and was dismissed never allowed to return. I went and got professional help and was able to be admitted to a small regional university. For the past year I have made deans list maintained a 3.4 GPA from that university and I am able to receive recommendations from my professors. I have been told that it will be almost impossible for me to transfer due to the mistakes I made in the past. How do I stress that I was immature and I am very remorseful for my actions. When I came home I suffered into a deep depression. Do I continue to try and meet with the admissions person at the university I want to attend? Do I meet with the Dean of Students? What will my previous university submit? Will they list all my infractions and try and prevent me from attending another college?

Sounds like you are excelling where you are. You will be asked about disciplinary issues when you apply.

Obviously the regional university you are now attending accepted you, so I wouldn’t worry too much about what will be reported. When you apply to yet another university, you will request your transcript from both the school you are currently attending and the school you previously attended. There is a limit to what information the school you previously attended can report on your transcript. If it directly relates to educational records, it can be reported, if it is private health related information, they most likely cannot report it.

If you want to know what will be reported, you should be able to request an official copy of your transcript. If it list anything that might be concerning to the school where you are applying, they will ask, and you can address their concerns. But most likely your success at your current school will speak for itself.

How much detail regarding conduct expulsion does a university divulge? Do Universities actually contact each other regarding a students conduct. My concern is the University I am applying to may reach out to my previous University for more detail. My first semester my roommates broke all the rules which I never participated in there activities. So, when I was contacted by housing and dean of students asked me explain myself I never responded because I thought it never pertained to me since they were the ones caught. So, I have numerous violations for not responding to all of their request to meet with the staff. After that incident that is when the Dean of Students suggested I take a medical leave (which now shows as academic probation on my record). I was asked not to return until the following year. I was able to take 2 classes at a State University (and had those credits transferred) and got a job. When I returned I was not ready and hated school. Thats when I wrote something inappropriate on an erasable white board outside someones dorm room. I guess that was the last straw and I was expelled. I am not sure how to explain this to the university I want to apply to. I don’t know how much detail to go into. I have been through so much and gone through a lot of healing for the past year and a half.

Why don’t you finish at your current university?

Can you ask the school that dismissed you what/how will be reported? Perhaps that might help you know exactly you have to explain.

The information my previous school is submitting is showing 13 violations. One of the violations say I violated local, state or federal law - which is not true. I have never had any disciplinary issues before or after I attended this university and now it is ruining my life. After being dismissed I attended a state university as a non degree seeking student. While I was there getting good grades I applied and was denied due to the disciplinary expulsion so now on the common app there is a question asking if I am allowed to return to that University and the answer is no. So, there are two universities I am not allowed to return to. Should I meet with the Dean of Students prior to even applying to this University? Does my current academic record at my current University outweigh my past? Should I have my current University write a letter?

I didn’t understand that you are not currently enrolled as a degree seeking student at your current university. Is there a decent community college nearby that would accept you? An advisor at a CC might have some experience with students in your situation and might know where they end up.

Being denied admission to the 2nd school isn’t the same as an expulsion. Unless you got into trouble there, I think you’d only put that you’re not allowed to return to the 1st university. You weren’t accepted to the 2nd.

You may have to get a degree at a cc first, then transfer. That will give you time to build relationships with professors so you can get references. It may help to put time and space between your expulsion and applications to other colleges.
