Transfer again????? Help

Hi,

Im a third year college student and am at my third school. I played baseball my first two years at two different colleges. Both schools were somewhat small. The First school had roughly 6K students and the second school had under 2k students. Through my first two years I was excelling in the class room posting a 3.8 GPA through two years. After getting burnt out of baseball I decided to transfer again to a larger institution that I had always wanted to go to. So I transfered to UNC Chapel Hill. Through my first semester I posted a 2.5 GPA struggling with the new school and the larger class sizes. I shook the semester off and started my second semester here at UNC and once again I find myself struggling and I cannot pin point why. I venture to guess that the larger class sizes have something to do with it. I do not party and I am putting in my time with the books. I just seem to not be digesting the information as well as I have in the past.

This is a huge problem for me that I need to get solved quickly. I have aspirations of medical school and I felt great about my resume before I transfered to UNC. Now I need to do something quick because I know C's wont get me into Med school!

I have contemplated maybe transferring back to my second school where I had a good relationship with my professors and made A's in my science classes. Im not sure if I want to do this though. I mean I have already transfered twice and I really like the atmosphere here and the student life at chapel hill. But, I almost feel like I need to put that aside and do what seems best for my grades so I can achieve my goal of Med school. I really am stumped on what to do. My last school was small, very small. The main reason why I transfered though was because I was not playing ball anymore and got into my dream school, It wasn't necessarily because I hated the school. Now Im starting to wonder if I would have been better off staying at the smaller school. I went from 20 kids per class to sitting in a 200 person lecture hall listening to a cocky professor try and teach us Analytical, Organic Chemistry, and Genetics. Its alarming because I have always had very good grades and study habits and here I feel like I am putting in the effort but I am not getting the results that I want.

Could anyone provide some suggestions on what to do?

Thanks

Just my opinion, but I don’t think you should transfer again, not yet anyway. One transfer isn’t a mark against you on a transcript, but multiple transfers begin to look like your response to a problem is to run away from it.

You might consider taking a year off. A little distance might help you figure out what’s going on or get a little more focus.

Have you talked to your advisor?

I’m not sure what you should do in regards to transferring, but I can tell you this. For this semester, you need to do whatever it takes to get your grades up. It sounds like you’re taking pre-med pre-reqs this semester (OChem and such) and those grades are going to be looked at VERY closely by med schools. Of course, all of your grades will be looked at, and overall GPA is important, but your “science GPA” is very important. You need to have a 3.6+ GPA overall…and hopefully higher for your science GPA.

So, find out what tutoring is offered at UNC and avail yourself of those services.

What is your major?

I have talked with advisors and Im going to talk to her again. I am planning on Dropping my two premed courses this semester and taking them over the summer. If I stayed in them I would pull a C in both probably which I know is not going to cut it. I would really like to stay here because I love it. I feel I just need to learn how to learn at this school if that makes sense. I am an Exercise Sports Science Major with a focus on Pre-Med. The Program here is top notch. I should graduate with a Chemistry Minor as well.

I think what Im going to do is stay and try and figure out what works best for me. If that means getting a tutor it means getting a tutor. I dont want to transfer again, and I love this place. I need to figure something out though! Do you guys have an tips on how to study at a large school? I think one thing that helped me in my past school was assignments due every night for my science classes. So it was constantly being pounded into my head, and here when I try to do the book problems I have no idea if Im doing it right or wrong, when my assignments before were online and they had tutorials if I got stuck.

Maybe the courseload is too heavy for you? How many semester hours are you taking?
