Transfer and not sure which school yet, what to do about i-20 and SEVIS?

Hello all,

I am an international student (I am Canadian if that matters, on F1) about to finish my AA right now, and am in the process of transferring to a different school.

I got accepted to Northeastern University, but I also applied to University of Miami and they haven't released their decisions yet.
I was told by my current school that I only have 16 days after the end of the semester to transfer my SEVIS record to the new school, and that I must do the transfer process and provide proof that I got accepted to the new school immediately (or very soon, semester ends next week).
I am not sure as to where I will attend until I get the decisions from UM:

Can I send my SEVIS to two universities?
Can I transfer to one school and request a new I-20 from the other school and then decide which one to attend?
What do I do if I transfer the SEVIS to Northeastern and then I decide to go to UM (my main concern)?

Thank you

What are your summer plans? If you are going home, it might be easier to let your current visa expire and apply for a new one before you come back. (This would also work if you wanted to stay & work in the States on OPT, then go home and come back to the US no more than 30 days before classes start.)

You cannot.

If you transferred your SEVIS to Northeastern now and then decide to go to Miami, it might be possible for Northeastern to release your SEVIS record and then send that to Miami; the same way that your current school would send your SEVIS record to Northeastern initially. I am not sure though if UCSIS would give you a hard time about that. The international office at your current school might know.

Only the school that holds your current SEVIS record can issue you an I-20 that keeps your current student visa active. If you request an I-20 from the other school, they’d have to open a new SEVIS record for you and then you’d have to apply for a new student visa on that SEVIS record.

Hi barium thanks for your answer.

Yes I will be going several of times this summer to Canada. Since I’m Canadian I can come to the US to visit without a visa. But when I come for the purpose of study I need to enter with an I-20.

Tomorrow I’ll ask if I can wait a week or two before sending my SEVIS. I have a feeling that if I send it to Boston and then for some reason I will want to attend in Miami I will have problems.

I am going to my college’s international students office tomorrow to get some answers, also regarding how can I renew my driver’s license if I don’t have my I-20 valid anymore.

I will update here what they tell me, I’m sure many other international students are dealing with similar situations.

I went to the international student office, so for those who are interested:

After the official last day of the semester you will be graduating you have up to 60 days to complete a transfer process to the a new university. If longer than that you would have to leave the country and re-apply for a new I20 from your country.
