Before I go ahead and spend the $ applying, I'm wondering if anyone has thoughts as to my chance of being offered admission as a sophomore transfer for Fall 2010. Stats, here goes: WM currently freshman at Boston University -- Dean's List (3.6gpa) for Fall 2009 and hoping for at least, if not better, this semester. Member of National Society Collegiate Scholars; work part-time at law firm; HS gpa of 3.39 (all advanced classes), 3 APs (Bio-5, Latin:Vergil-4, Stats-3), president of latin club, varsity golf - 4ys, varsity crew - 2 ys. SATs: 700M/600V/540WR. Not applying for fin. aid (if it even matters). Applying as a Classics major.

So, there it is -- would really appreciate your thoughts. Thanks.

“Chancing” freshmen is already just guesswork and a comparison of numbers, a classic case of the blind leading the blind. It’s even harder for transfers because there is a much smaller pool of both applicants and accepted transfers. Northwestern does not release transfer statistics. I cannot tell you if you will get in, though your stats look all right (it’s worth applying). I can only advise you to:

Work hard, keep that GPA high. Prove that you just didn’t get a good GPA in high school (for whatever reason), rather than that you are not intelligent, or not a hard worker. Do keep up the extracurriculars, though, they look fascinating.

Make sure that you know what it is about Northwestern that you want, both for your essay and for you. Don’t transfer to Northwestern just because it’s a top-whatever school, and don’t tell them that they’re highly ranked, either (they know). Find out about Classics at NU. Find out if you’ll be able to accomplish all that you want to accomplish (for example, transfers are somewhat limited on study abroad).

It may be challenging transferring from a semester school. My transfer credit process has been somewhat painful, even from another quarter school, and I may have difficulty doing everything I came here to do.

Transfers are not eligible for financial aid, so it will not make a difference that you won’t be asking for it (though, for the record, freshman admission is “need blind”).

transfers are eligible for financial aid. just limited
