Hi all. I have'nt posted in a couple of years, namely because I made my decision early on to attend community college. Now, I'm going into my sophomore year and I'm looking into schools to transfer to. I will be completing my AA in May. I am looking into majoring in International Studies. My end result would hopefully be working in national security/intelligence within a government agency. I'm looking for general suggestions as to where to apply. I'm from the North East. I'd prefer to stay north of DC. I'm open to literally any and all suggestions. Thanks in advance!

Can you not come up with general suggestions by studying CC and reading Fiske and such advice? Or do a search for International Studies colleges in Google? Without your resumé and FA info we’d be doing nothing but producing a shopping list you could put together yourself.

Alright, if my resume would help, I can certainly provide that.

Current GPA: 2.66 (low, I know)
Credits Attained: 30, 49 at the end of fall semester.

Work Experience:
Three years of retail, various employers

Internships:
Summer 2013- Challenger British Soccer- corporate soccer company. I was an office intern.
Summer 2014- RI GOP. Political Party. I write op-ed pieces as well as manage the twitter account with one of my peers.

I have one excellent letter of reccomendation from an English professor. My high school transcripts are decent. I’ll be finishing an Associate of Arts degree in May with two internships under my belt. My situation in a nutshell, basically I thought I wanted to study political science. Turns out, working within a political party isn’t all it’s cracked up to be and I definitley don’t see myself doing this for the rest of my life. Any suggestions are appreciated.

If you haven’t done so already, you may want to consider studying a critical language (such as Arabic, Chinese, Hindu, Russian, etc) which would be a great asset in your prospective field. If you decide to study a critical language you could theoretically narrow down your prospective list of schools to ones that offer classes in your language. To that end, you could look into The Language Flagship (http://www.thelanguageflagship.org/).

You’re not that far away from high school, so what will colleges see when they see your h.s. transcript? are you a resident of RI? will your family support you? are you limited to New England or can we look anywhere?

@jkeil911 from what I gather, the fact that I’ll have over 60 credits cancels out the majority of my high school transcripts. They aren’t horrendous. Mainly B’s and C’s, a smattering of A’s in English and History courses and two D’s from my sophomore year. I’ve been on a constant upward swing since then, nothing but improvement throughout the last two years of high school and all of college.

ETA: Yes, I am from Rhode Island. As of right now, my parents will probably help me in the way of cosigning on my loans if their credit allows for it. If nothing else, that’s what they’d be able to do.

I’m just looking for elements that would strengthen your app, OP. The cc 2.66 says you can probably do college work but not that you will smoke it. So we’ll need to look at programs that take that into consideration.

You can only borrow $7500 each of the last two years, so that will be a factor in the search.

Here are the colleges that have IS majors:

<a href=“International Relations and Affairs - Colleges That Offer This Degree”>International Relations and Affairs - Colleges That Offer This Degree;

Basically, we’re looking for inexpensive colleges that you can get into that have international/global studies/relations. No Rhode Island school will serve.

Below is a CC thread on very low cost colleges, most of them OOS publics:

<a href=“VERY LOW COST OOS COA universities......less than $25k COA for everything! - Financial Aid and Scholarships - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/financial-aid-scholarships/1651944-very-low-cost-oos-coa-universities-less-than-25k-coa-for-everything-p1.html

Match the inexpensive schools with the schools that have IS majors. Get back with any hits.
