Transfer Applicant Thread Fall 2016

Hey everyone! I’m starting this thread for people applying to Barnard for transfer for Fall 2016! The deadline’s coming up in about a month, so I wanted to see who else was sending in apps!

Here are my stats (post your if you want too!)

College GPA: 3.92
HS GPA: 4.55 weighted (we didn’t have unweighted)
ACT: 31
SAT: 2100
AP: Macro Econ (5), Micro Econ (5), AP English Lang (4), AP US (4), AP Bio (3), AP French (3), AP Chem (4)
Prof Recs: It’s only my first semester in college and I go to a large public university, but I think they’ll be pretty good because I got pretty close to one of the teachers
Essays: working super hard on them! Good I hope lol
Activities: Currently volunteering in a lab doing research on campus and working in the dining hall. In HS was the president of NHS, NEHS and Mock Trial, also did varsity swimming
Hooks: From NY, currently going to college across the country, learned a lot about why I wanna come back etc etc. Also my parent works for Columbia (not a professor, just a staff member so idk if that’s really a draw but I would get free tuition to Barnard or Columbia)

I’m super nervous, and I’d love to go to Barnard, but I’m definitely not getting my hopes up. How about you guys?

Hey! I’m applying to transfer to Barnard for Fall 2016 too!
I currently go to a private college in DC, but want a tighter community and am also changing my major.
I got wait listed from Barnard when I applied as a senior in hs but they didnt let anyone off the waitlist because of the large number of people who accepted the offer of admission.

What are your reasons for Barnard? Are you applying anywhere else?

I’m applying as a transfer for Fall 2016, too! I’m working on my essays now, and I’m getting nervous. I’m mainly wanting to transfer because I want to get out of my hometown and have a normal college experience. Barnard is such a tight knit school but I love that it’s also in NYC. How are you doing with your essays?

I’m also applying to transfer for fall 2016! Barnard is my top choice because they have the exact major I want (literature with a concentration in film) and my current film production professor says that Barnard has a pretty good experimental film program! I think the hardest essay for me is the general common app essay. I’m not sure if it’s supposed to be like the freshman one where you tell a little story about yourself first and then go into details, or if you just go straight into why you want to transfer.

I submitted my apps on february 13th and got the tracking info yesterday! I found the general common app essay the hardest as well.

I just submitted my app for Columbia last night. Will be submitting appear Barnard later this week. What are everyone’s stats? Here is mine

Current college: Non HYP Ivy
College GPA: 3.86
HS GPA: 4.30 weighted (we didn’t have unweighted)
ACT: 31
IB Diploma

The reason why I am trying to transfer out of my current school is because I want to switch majors and go closer to home.

anyone received any decisions yet? i saw BU released some on monday, fordham released decisions already so… anyone got anything so far?

anyone receive their applicant IDs?

@StrawberryIceTea I received my application ID on April 4th!
@frenchie2729 I’m pretty sure decisions aren’t released until May 15th

I haven’t received an application ID yet! Yikes! Is that bad?

I’m currently at a religious private school but Barnard has been my DREAM forever. I was waitlisted last year so fingers crossed that there’s better news this year!

Current college: Religious private school
College GPA: 3.85
HS GPA: 4.0 (we didn’t do weighted!)
ACT: 32
Essays: Good, I think? They gave a pretty convincing reason for transferring (size and religious differences with my current school)
Activities: Publicist for the campus Political Affairs Society and Women in Politics organization, interned for the Clinton campaign, member of campus PR society, Phi Eta Sigma, writer for a well-known online publication, local youth mentor, varsity soccer, editor-in-chief of HS paper
Hooks: I’m a liberal coming from a highly conservative mormon school? Idk if that’s a hook haha

I’m freaking out. Best of luck to everyone!

I’m applying as a transfer to Barnard and I’m so nervous!! When I applied my senior year, I had no idea what I wanted and never felt that strongly about a school; after getting a recommendation to look at Barnard, I looked at the website and absolutely fell in love. I’ve been to campus twice now and just can’t imagine anything more perfect.

Current School: Honors College at College of Charleston
College GPA: 3.88
HS GPA: 4.0 weighted (I went to the #35 HS in the country, so this is pretty good for my school)
ACT: 31
AP: Macro Econ (5), English Lang (4), Lit, (5), Euro (5), Spanish (5), Human Geography (5), Psychology (5),US Government (5)
Letters of Rec: I have one from my calc prof that’s really strong, we became pretty close last semester and he said he would write me the strongest letter possible, the other one should be pretty strong as well
Essays: I slaved over these; had so many people read them, and hopefully they convey how passionate I am about Barnard. For my “why Barnard” essay I wrote about the magnolia tree and how they picked it up and moved it, and used it as a metaphor for transferring
Activities: at CofC I’m part of the Honors Student Association and on the Media Committee, I volunteer with our special needs program (REACH program) as a mentor for 6 hours/week, I volunteered at Charleston Fashion Week and worked on wardrobe crew for the spring play (I want to go into fashion), and also am in the microeconomics club (econ major). In high school I did Model UN, worked 15 hours/week, and was the treasurer of SHARE, a charity club, where I organized and ran a ton of fundraisers.
Hooks: I’m super passionate about Barnard if you can’t tell, and I don’t necessarily hate College of Charleston, I just don’t find the environment intellectually stimulating enough, and it’s a world away from my fast-paced home in NJ, which I really miss. I’m transferring because I want more of a challenge which I think could play to my advantage. I emphasized all of that in my Common App essay. I’m also just obsessed with NY and would love to take advantage of going to school in the city.

One thing I am a little nervous about is transfer credits; I am taking 30 credits this year but I looked at the catalog and it looks like a lot of them don’t have counterparts at Barnard or Columbia. I know you need to have 24 credits to be considered a transfer student so I don’t know what will happen if less than 24 transfer. I have a lot of AP credits but I don’t think those count. Is anyone else worried about this?

Also for anyone who is wondering when decisions come out, I dug around on transfer threads from last year and it looks like they usually come out on May 14th which means we have about another month of waiting

@emilyatk I’ve also looked around on them and that seems to be the case! In 2011 some people heard in early May but I think the least we’re gonna have to wait is like 3 weeks. The wait is making me so nervous!

Hi my loves!!! I’ve also applied to Barnard, and have been in love with the school the past two years. Would be a total dream to get in. I grew up on an extremely isolated island in Hawai’i so many opportunities were not available to me in high school. My school offered three AP classes TOTAL and they weren’t even offered every year. I applied to Barnard as a senior and my high school counselor lied to me about submitting my required materials. All of my applications were canceled and I had to go to the University of Hawai’i this year because they didn’t require any documents from my school and had a very late application deadline.

I’m so happy we have this 2nd chance to try and get into our dream school. Good luck babes!

It is really cool to see some of the other girls that are also applying to Barnard! The wait is also killing me and I am counting down the days until May 14th. If we don’t hear anything by then I’m going to be a nervous mess! Is anyone else a little worried about the fact that Barnard had their lowest acceptance rate in their history this year for incoming freshman? It was only 15% and I know that last year they only accepted 20% of transfer students so I am getting more and more nervous everyday!

Does anyone know how the schools evaluate GPAs? I have received grades for two semesters at college. I’m at a top NESCAC (14% acceptance rate) and they calculate my GPA as a 3.67 (this is a solid A- at Barnard) because at my school an A and an A+ are both equivalent to 4.00.

However, at Barnard, an A+ is 4.33. Under Barnard calculations, my GPA would be a 3.73, which is considerably different because it puts my GPA into the in between range of an A- and an A.

@stressedgirl13 if you go to a top NESCAC you’re already better off than me. I’m trying to transfer from a large public university that’s not very recognized. I’m so nervous about decisions!

@cjens10 It makes me sooooo nervous that the acceptance rate is dropping. I feel like less transfers will be accepted this year for sure and it really makes me nervous. Good luck to all of us :((

@stressedgirl13
They’re going to look at you’re transcript. Your grades are your grades, regardless of how they calculate your GPA. It shouldn’t make a difference.

@deepcountrygirl @cjens10 I know!!! The acceptance rate was so low for regular decision. Let’s just hope that a bunch of people decide not to attend. Anyone wanna guess when Barnard will let us know? I’ve looked at the old transfer threads and in past years they’ve done two waves of decisions, one in early May and one in Mid-May. Let’s hope they do that again this year (and that we’re in the first batch!)
