transfer applicant with a lot of uncertainty....please help

I am currently a freshman attending a top fifteen school. There are some things at this school that makes me unhappy and I am thinking of transferring. However, I only realized this a couple days ago and most deadlines have either passed, or is set very soon. I really like Harvard, Stanford, and Brown but here is my situation:

I barely got a 3.4 GPA in my first semester of college. It was tough for me to transition from my extremely small school and I received all As except for one class. This semester, I am taking very rigorous classes and should be able to get a 3.8 or 3.9. My high school grades are very good, but not perfect. My test scores are excellent. My professor recs should be good as well. I will be paying full at all three places.

My question is...is my profile almost an auto reject for these schools if I apply right now? I called two of the schools, and even though it's late, they told me I can still submit my application. I have two other options. I can stay for another year, get my GPA up to a 3.7 and then apply but I heard it's impossible for junior transfers or I can take a year off and focus on some ECs that I always wanted to do but never had time for.

Then, I will apply in the spring. However, while I sincerely want to do that during my gap year, I don't want to apply and get rejected and come back to my current school with no friends left. So, what do you think is my best option right now, what will give the higher chances of successfully transferring? Thanks you so much, I am so conflicted and your help would be invaluable.

If you applied this year, you probably won’t get in. Sure the schools said they would consider your application, but they probably just want your app fee, and applying late would be a handicap compared to applicants who got their stuff together before the deadline. Plus your GPA won’t be extremely competitive at Harvard, Stanford, Brown, etc even if you do bring it up to a 3.7. I would say, don’t waste your time this year, and try for a junior transfer next year, but look at other schools too. If you really hate your school, try to transfer to a school for Spring 2011.

what school are you at right now?

for Harvard they actually takes more sophomore transfers than freshmen transfers. Waiting another year won’t hurt you. In fact, it gives you more time to research and prepare for your application

What is that supposed to mean? I don’t think it’s impossible for junior transfers. I can’t tell you what to do, if you’re going to regret not applying this year go ahead and apply but if you feel like you really don’t want to- wait until next year.
