Transfer Applicant

Application was completed first week of January, all of my letters of recommendations and instructor evaluations were sent in by last week of Jan/First week of Feb..

I have already been accepted to all of the other schools I had applied to, but Dartmouth is of course my number one. I realize that acceptance is a reach (last year I think it was something along the lines of 25 accepted out of 800 transfer applicants).

It is unlikely they have even begun looking at the transfer applications yet, but I am extremely anxious.

I do regret not pushing my military experience (US Marine) a little more, but I am uncomfortable being the over-the-top ex-military guy. Since starting school in 2010 I have tried to branch out to things which I was previously unfamiliar with. I write for my school newspaper, belong to multiple academic honor societies, etc..

However, I have never forgotten my time as a grunt and founded the Vet's Club at my current school and currently work for the VA. I did not force that approach in my app though and think it was a mistake not to. I guess we will see!

Hey what are you stats? I am just curious and what other schools did you apply to?

I am also a Veteran. Served for four years in the US Navy. I took almost the opposite route than you with my essay. I capitalized on my experience. Not in an arrogant way just to diversify my self. I think when these schools are letting in 10-25 kids they are looking for kids that are going to bring something special not just a high GPA and grades. So I believe the military is the perfect avenue for that.

A little about me:

Im 23 and I go to a Community College in Georgia. I am looking to transfer for the Fall of 2012.

My school list:
Yale
Dartmouth
Columbia GS
George Washington
UVA
UNC
University of Georgia
Emory

I have been accepted to Georgia already but no one else.

I have a 3.6 GPA with 60 hrs after the spring semester. I have a bunch of good EC’s capitalized on Military awards and experience. Essays are good. My proof reader (dad) went to Yale and Harvard so he kinda knows how to play the game.

Good Luck to you!

Here’s a little of the background info your asking about:

I, as you do, attend a Community College. I have completed 43 credits and have a 3.86 GPA. Currently I am taking 16 credits this semester and hope to bump that over a 3.9 GPA.

Schools that I have applied to:

Dartmouth
Tulane
Baylor
Penn State
Nebraska

Strange list I know, however, a school being a Yellow Ribbon Program participant was a must for me. Also, I am a city kid who grew up urban in a large city up North, I always wanted to “go away” to school but until the Post 9/11 GI Bill didnt really have that chance.

Growing up a city kid also made me shy away from applying to schools located in a major Northern city (see Boston, Philly, NYC, DC).

Best of luck to you! You have an impressive list of schools there and sound like you will be successful wherever you choose. Don’t be discouraged if you get rejected by some of them, stay motivated.

I’m curious, did you get in?

GLOzzy, I just wanted to say that I am impressed by your writing here and by the modest, balanced tone of your post. I’m sure that comes across in your applications, and that it is more effective than chest-thumping. Good luck at all of your schools.

–bigworld-- No word yet, I will post here again once confirmed rejected or accepted.

–Consolation-- Thank you for the compliment and the well wishes. Being accepted to Dartmouth would be a life-changing opportunity for me.

Hey, Marine here. I applied to Dartmouth while I was still in Afghanistan (I actually am still here now). I wrote quite a bit about my service in the Marine Corps, but I am the same way in that I want to do other stuff. I got accepted (as a Freshman, not as a transfer student though). So, hopefully that will help.

2100 SAT
4.1 (Weighted) High School GPA

I also have an application in at Columbia GS, but I haven’t heard from them yet.

Congratulations Fritz! Both on your acceptance and your upcoming EAS. Good luck with your decision.

Thank you. I have to admit that I am happier about the upcoming EAS, but I am really excited for school too.

Also, GLOzzy, have you seen the Leadership Scholar Program? It exists entirely to help get active duty and veteran Marines at schools. No additional service is required or anything. They have slots set aside for Marines getting out every year, and I am pretty sure that is why I got accepted.

[Home Page - Leadership Scholar Program](http://www.leadershipscholarprogram.com/)

It is too late for this year, but if you don’t get it and want to reapply, check it out. Basically you send them some paperwork, and they tell any school you want to apply to that you are a recommended applicant or not.

Thanks Fritz, looks like a solid program. It’s all or nothing for me on this application though. I am not planning on transferring to a 4 year institution and then attempting to apply again. I will fully embrace wherever I land come fall and focus on being successful there.

I will be passing on this info to Marines just beginning at my Vet’s club at current school. Good looking out.

Thanks, I am just sorry I couldn’t send it to you earlier. I’m sure you will still do fine though.

Is there a College Confidential sector for Marines/military in general? Post it there as well. That is information that really ought to get as much play as possible. Lt. Col. Dad (1924-1992) would think so.

That is, IMHO, the best possible attitude. There’s a lot to be said for the idea of blooming where you’re planted, as the saying goes. :)

Well, only a few weeks of anticipation remain. If asked on different days, or even what time of day, I would give conflicting answers on my chances and expectations. All part of the process I guess.

I was able to visit a couple of the schools I have been accepted to earlier this month and I am happy with my options if declined admission to Dartmouth.

However, it is funny how different my thought process has become between the other institutions and Dartmouth.

For the other schools I carefully weigh each aspect, no matter how mundane, the school offers me. Scholarships, financial aid, should I use my military benefits? Or should I save them for graduate or law school? Bars? Girls? Living expenses? Any friends in the area?

For Dartmouth, it is much easier. If I get the green light, I go. I make it work anyway I have to. This may seem like an easy statement to make, however, consider I have only been preparing to attend a four year school for the last 11 months. Not while in high school, not when I graduated, not when I was serving in the Marines, not even when I started taking classes at community college in August 2010.

It is strange for me to want to attend a specific school so intensely. When first reading these boards I could not believe how these kids would be so distraught over rejection from one school when they had many worthy alternatives. I can somewhat sympathize now.

Good luck to all, will let you know the outcome soon.

Ozzy

I also applied for transfer to Dartmouth, with 80 credits from a 2 year school.
College GPA is a 3.8.

My high school GPA is not so great, and it might work against me. But one can still hope!

i applied as well, best of luck everyone!

I have also applied as a transfer student. What attracted me is that so many Dartmouth students seem enthusiastic about their school

Did you guys submit an extra essay? I did…I felt that the commonapp general personal statement was not enough. I added a short supplemental essay under ‘additional info’…do you think that was a bad choice on my part? (:

I did an extra essay as well, though I had a specific reason why I did so. I don’t think it would be a bad choice, unless it’s too long.
