Do you have any stats? I am wondering if I should try. I got rejected as normal applicant (int'l). I would probably apply as international transfer applicant. Thanks for all the info.

One thing that can be said about transfering in in the past few years is that it is wicked-hard (I think that's how they say it in Boston). From the Common Data Set and Matt McGann's post on his weblog, the following are the total number of transfer applicants admitted for each fall term, out of the total number applying:

for fall 2005 entry: 17 admitted out of 259 applications
fall 2004: 6 / 302
fall 2003: 5 / 319
fall 2002: 25 / 379
fall 2001: 44 / 338

There doesn't seem to be a breakdown of how many of those were internationals, but the raw number of admits is very small. There is some info on the transfer process in the Transfer Students section of admissions.mit.edu, including some comments about the sort of test scores and GPAs they would expect. And you can always contact one of the staff with further questions.

say what would be the chances for transfer for a guy who is studying in Pton. (Not me just curious to know whether the reputation of the college affects a decision)

Almost none unless it's an exceptional circumstance.. I mean, why would a Princeton kid want to transfer? That being said, I know of a Rickoid who transferred from Harvard, but she was admitted as a freshman (ie. applied for freshman admissions) if that makes a difference.

How can you apply as a freshman if you're already attending college?

She applied for MIT freshman admissions as a high school student, got in, but went to Harvard. Afterwards, she applied for transfer admissions at MIT, got in, and transferred.

Hey I mean we should just forget the part that 'why would a pton or an ivy kid want to transfer' but supposing he did want to transfer. Then would the reputation of the school help him in getting a transfer admit.

Is admission as a freshman a guarantee for transfer ?:P Just curious.
