Transfer Application Credit Help

Can anyone please give me advice? My boyfriend is a current college freshman who is applying to transfer. He will have completed 28 credit hours by the end of this semester at his university, and he also passed 4 AP exams which will also give him 13 credit hours at his current university(he forgot to put this on 2 of his applications, and these are not included in the 28 credit hours I mentioned, and he never technically submitted these scores to his current university). This includes 15 credits completed during first semester and 13 this semester. It looks like everywhere he is applying requires 30 minimum credit hours to transfer, but he didn’t realize this. Do the 30 credit hours have to be completed by the time he starts at the new university, or by the time of the application?

What should he do? Would the 13 credit hours from AP exams and push him over the 30 hour minimum? Or is there a way for him to register for summer classes and that count? Also, should he directly contact an admissions officer and ask what the policy is for their school? Any advice is appreciated!

Did he take the equivalent of a full course load this year?

He needs to check each college he wants to apply to for the following:

  1. What credit his AP scores will give at that college (not his current college).
  2. Whether the college includes AP credit (as determined by that college) for meeting the minimum number of credits to transfer.

Note that it is also possible that an AP score that counts for subject credit at his current college may not be accepted for subject credit at a college he wants to transfer to. For example, a student with a 3 on calculus AB may have gotten subject credit for calculus 1 at the current college, but may be missing subject credit for calculus 1 if the student transfers to a college that requires a 4 or higher on calculus AB to get subject credit for calculus 1.

Also, he should make his own account to ask the question, instead of asking through you.

He took 15 credit hours in the fall, and is currently taking 13 credit hours

I’d suggest he contact the admission office at each of the schools he’s applied to and ask them. In addition, if he’s accepted there is no guarantee that his new school will actually accept all of his credits. Schools usually make that determination after a student enrolls.

No fair having him using your account now, as a result of these responses.

He’s an adult now, and should be able to ask on his own.

Sorry about that!
