I am applying to colleges as a Psychology major, but my counselor gave me the suggestion as sending extra UC applications as a Chinese major.

I know Chinese majors are relatively rare (thus, less competitive?), but is this even a risk worth taking? I'm only applying to one school as a Pscyh major (which is why he wants me to apply to more), but is it worth it to lessen the strength of my solo application (showing my love for Psych AND their exclusive campus) for another major? The Chinese major is for both UCSB and UCLA.

Sorry if this seems elementary, but some extra voices would definitely help clear my head.

What do you plan on doing with a Chinese major? Seems pretty pointless if you don’t have a plan for the major. I can understand why your counselor recommended that if the motive was to get you into the school no matter what.

If it is for Cal, then you may have a chance of switching into psych once you get there. But it’s completely pointless b/c: 1) Your personal statement will have to reflect your interest in Chinese. Are you really fascinated abt that major or just want to get to the school that bad? 2) Like xViral, I don’t think a Chinese degree could help with job, or even grad school in psych, no offense language majors.

Last, don’t listen to CC counselors lol. I don’t know how they are at your school, but at mine they are like “just fall to earth from another galaxy”…

Me: “Since I can only TAG with one school, which one would you recommend?”
2 CC counselors (yeah two): “You can TAG with many schools as you like this year”
facepalm

Long story short, go with psych if it’s your passion.
